Update to the 2021 African American Wellness Walk

Dear 2021 AAWW Participant,

Due to increasing COVID cases in our community, we have made the decision to offer the virtual option only for the 2021 African American Wellness Walk: Walk in My Shoes (AAWW). While this is a necessary change, our excitement about this event continues to grow! We are extending the walk period for an additional two weeks, from Aug. 20 to Sep. 25. This will provide participants more time to log miles as we focus on healthy living as a lifestyle and a commitment to wellness. The event will conclude with a post-event virtual experience on Saturday, Sep 25, beginning at 1 p.m.

Here in week two of the walk, it is clear we are all going strong and logging thousands of steps for a great cause. One of the best aspects of the AAWW is the fellowship and excitement our participants share. While you are walking, we’d like you to help us capture and share the great energy we are hearing about. Here’s how you can share:

  • Take a video as you log steps and miles, especially if you’re walking with friends, loved ones, or coworkers
  • Show us where and when you’re walking
  • Take a couple seconds to explain why you’re walking and what the AAWW means to you
  • If you’re participating in a challenge, let us know about that as well

Files larger than 150MB will not be able to be uploaded. Videos containing foul language, offensive images, or political references will not be accepted. Last year’s event saw more than 2,300 participants across 41 states and five countries. With our theme “Walk in My Shoes,” the 2021 AAWW looks to be bigger and better than ever.

The AAWW was established in 2000 to raise awareness and combat the heart health disparities for African Americans. In the two decades since, the walk has grown to address the alarming underlying health conditions that plague our families and friends in minority communities, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Across the nation and in our own backyard, we continue to see stories of inequitable treatment of African Americans. The AAWW seeks to highlight these inequities, ranging from social justice to healthcare access, and raise awareness on how we can work together to combat them.

A 2019 assessment by Public Health – Dayton & Montgomery County has shown that Black babies die at a rate that is four times higher than White babies. Black women are less likely to receive adequate prenatal care and are twice as likely to have a low-birth weight baby compared to White women. Across Montgomery County, Black men have higher rates of heart disease, stroke, prostate cancer, and diabetes when compared to the countywide average. The average lifespan for a Black man in Montgomery County is 65.5 years – six years less than White men and 13 years lower than White women.

The pandemic has also disproportionately impacted African Americans. Black Ohioans make up about 13% of the state’s population, yet account for larger percentages of COVID-19 cases (22.8%), hospitalizations (30.6%), and deaths (18.7%). Although Black people are only 21.5% of the county population, they account for 35.5% of COVID-19 cases in Montgomery County. According to the Ohio Department of Health’s statistics from June 14, only 30.11% of Black Ohioans have now been fully vaccinated. As a healthcare provider, we are acutely aware of how the “social determinants of health” impact health outcomes and are committed to providing greater support and awareness.

Your Donations Will Support These Organizations

Last year, more than 2,300 individuals across 41 states and five countries walked to fight health and justice inequities, and to raise awareness of very real issues that can be seen in our own backyard to provide To actively combat against health inequities disproportionately impacting the African American community, especially surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, more than $33,000 were raised through donations and sponsorships. These funds were directly reinvested in the community through the distribution of COVID Care Kits, which were be given out in high risk communities in the Dayton area.
