As a runner I have used Active.com for at least 10 years. About 5 years ago I started using Active.com as a Race Director – putting up several races to allow runners to signup for our races. I was surprised to find that about 30% of our runners used the Active.com website to register even though Active.com charges them an extra $3.25 for registering online. This in spite of making sure we had multiple places for people to download a pdf form they could print and send in for free.
But the Active website is awful. It is hard to use, it has gotten very diverse so you have camp signups right alongside road races. They have introduced so much advertising and so much complexity into the website it is kind of ugly. They also use old technology (Cold Fusion which came out in 1995) that tends to be very slow in terms of performance. They do not have Web 2.0 technology that would let race directors actually complete registration services on their own website with a simple widget. And the $3.25 is a pretty high processing fee.
So I decided that there was a need for an alternative:
