Welcome to My 2021 Sharon's Ride.Run.Walk. San Diego Fundraising Page for TEAM REIKO!

Sharon's Ride.Run.Walk San Diego is a 15-mile Bike Ride or 5K Run/Walk that is very important to me.  I am raising money to help The Epilepsy Foundation of San Diego County so they can provide wraparound support services and programs at no cost to individuals and families affected by epilepsy.  Please help me support this cause and spread awareness for epilepsy.

DID YOU KNOW?

  • 1 in 10 people will have a seizure in their lifetime.
  • 1 in 26 people will be diagnosed with epilepsy.
  • 3.4 million people nationwide are affected by epilepsy.
  • 50,000 San Diegans are living with epilepsy.
  • Epilepsy is the fourth most common neurological disorder and affects people of all ages.
  • Epilepsy means the same thing as "seizure disorders."
  • Epilepsy is characterized by unpredictable seizures and can cause other health problems.
  • Epilepsy is a spectrum condition with a wide range of seizure types and control varying from person-to-person.
  • Public misunderstandings of epilepsy cause challenges that are often worse than the seizures.

Epilepsy is more than seizures.  Every story matters in this fight.  Here is my personal story of WHY this matters...

In May of 2018, my cell phone rang and life as I knew it changed.

It appeared to be my daughter Reiko calling, which I thought was odd, since she was away at college in San Francisco, and typically did not call me during the school day. But it wasn’t Reiko calling- it was her friend calling to tell me that Reiko had a seizure and collapsed during class. At this moment she was in the ambulance being transported to the hospital.

As luck would have it, one of the students in her class had medical training and was able to attend to her immediately. Paramedics were also on campus and arrived quickly. My Uber ride to the airport, the plane ride, then the ride to the hospital was agonizing. Thus began our journey into the world of epilepsy and seizure disorders.

Fast forward the next 6 months and Reiko would experience two more Grand Mal (Tonic Clonic Seizures) - one while jogging in Golden Gate Park, where she was found and helped by good Samaritans and again a few months later while riding as a passenger in a car.  When the paramedics called me from Golden Gate Park, it was a call that as a parent you never want to receive. She had a seizure while running, had fallen on pavement, sustained scrapes and bruises and bit her tongue, but thankfully no head injury or broken bones. Over the next year our family would experience a long and stressful journey of discovery, including numerous doctor’s appointments, MRI’s, EEG’s, various therapies, medications, side effects from medications and more.

Through all of this though, I am so proud of Reiko’s grit and determination and ability to overcome adversity. As a young person to lose your license for over a year, to lose your sense of freedom and the unexpected nature of this medical difference can be incredibly challenging. We also celebrate that she graduated last year, (albeit during COVID) summa cum laude, top of her class from University of San Francisco

We have gratitude for the many friends and family who have supported us through this journey. We celebrate that although she is still living with epilepsy, which provides continued uncertainty – we are grateful her seizures are controlled. She has been seizure free for more than 2 years! It was her initial seizure that also brought me to the Epilepsy Foundation as the CEO. At our Foundation I have met the most amazing kindred spirits…staff and volunteers who want nothing more than to pay it forward by offering wrap-around services and unconditional support and love for all individuals and families impacted by epilepsy. Thank you for considering a donation of any amount to Team Reiko so we can continue to pay it forward as well.

With appreciation,

Wendy
