Akoma rites of passage journey is a journey for young girls aged 9 to 16 years of age. The journey embraces the teachings for self-awareness and self-respect.  The journey runs on a 7 session program cycle. During this cycle the participant affectionately known as princesses are coupled with a mentor. Mentoring affords the young girl the opportunity to have some guidance from an outside individual who has her best interest at heart. The mentor can assist with the navigation of life, ideas and dreams.  

The teachings will be from an Afrocentric perspective.  They will be held weekly with a variety of topics such as but not limited to: journaling, healthy living and relationships. The culmination of the rites of passage will be a cultural trip.

It is the mission of Akoma Rites of passage program to provide quality services in a loving environment in an educational milieu to young girls affectionately known as princesses. We are striving to promote empowerment and encouragement to become all that they want to be.

The vision is to have young people become and sustain being self-responsible and develop an higher sense of pride and higher level of self-esteem.

They are provided a pre and post intervention of the Beck Depression Inventory and the Pediatric Symptom Checklist.
