Hey y'all!
In planning this year's Black Knight DONNA Mother's Day 5K - mammography has been top of mind for me. Why?
- We will be honoring an amazing family at the 5K, and highlighting screening - specifically advanced screening - that literally saved her life at only 41 years old.
- New guidance was released this week around screening, urging all women to get screened every other year starting at 40 (duh) and also - YES! We should talk about the every other year thing - but whatever. Read more »
- Baptist MD Anderson is bringing out the Buddy Bus to the 5K for on-site mobile mammography, YAY - make an appointment »
So it got me thinking... when was my last mammogram? Oh fiddlesticks, it was 2021! So while you guys are racing the 5K, 'Manda is headed to the Buddy Bus for her Mammogram. Lead by example! When was your last Mammogram?
If I can put my IBTC in a vice Saturday morning, y'all can make a gift to my Mobile Mammography Mom 'Manda fundraiser. Our team is VERY close to meeting a $15,000 fundraising goal. Please give in support of the critical programs of The DONNA Foundation, serving those living with breast cancer.
Love you!!
PS - some info from the article I think is particularly important pasted below:
Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among women. About 42,000 women and 500 men die from the disease each year, according to the CDC.
"If all women followed our new recommendation, we could reduce mortality from breast cancer in the U.S. by about 20%," says Mangione, saving about 8,000 lives a year. "That's a big reduction in mortality from breast cancer," she says.
Black women are 40% more likely to die from breast cancer, so the new recommendation is "incredibly important" to address this disparity, Mangione says. "Starting at 40 actually creates the most benefit for Black women in our country," she says.
