New Date: Sunday, August 30, 2020
UPDATE 3/16/2020: The 13th Annual BEF Run for Education has been rescheduled to Sunday, August 30, 2020. All active registrations will be honored for the new date and the registration period will remain open as we head toward our new race date. Please check back for more updates as they become available.
On the evening of March 11, 2020, officers of the Benicia Education Foundation met to discuss how best to address hosting the 13th Annual BEF Run for Education during this time of COVID-19 spread. While Benicia was not subject to specific mandates in terms of group gatherings at that time, BEF felt it was necessary to consider its options for holding the event as scheduled, postponing until a later date, or cancelling the event.
In light of Solano County’s recommendations to practice social distancing and to limit group gatherings, the 13th Annual BEF Run for Education will be postponed until a later date. Information released from the Benicia Unified School District on March 12, 2020 to practice social distancing, along with the cancellation of many school-based events, follows a community-wide recognition of the need to do our part to slow the spread of the disease.
BEF hopes to host the Run for Education toward the end of summer and to use it as an opportunity to welcome back families to the new BUSD school year. When evaluating how the virus spread could have impacted the original race date, officers and the race director felt that some participants and volunteers may not have felt comfortable gathering in mass. Additionally, hosting the event on March 29 may have required BEF to cancel post-race awards and events on the Marina Green, all which would have taken away from the community-focused experience that BEF hoped to create.
Despite its plans to postpone, BEF is committed to honoring all current registrations for the rescheduled date and that date will be announced as soon as it is confirmed by the City of Benicia. Should participants wish to switch to the virtual run (done on participants' own time and participants do not come on race day), cancel their registration, or cancel their registration and seek a refund, they may indicate that on the included form. As a non-profit organization, BEF depends on donations and fundraiser to accomplish its mission to serve the students of the Benicia Unified School District. The Annual Run for Education is BEF's biggest fundraiser and current events may drastically impact BEF's ability to continue its work to provide BUSD students with important educational opportunities.
Thank you for your patience as BEF works through this process. We understand your concern and hope to see you later this year when we are able to announce our new date. Please check back for updates as they become available.
New this year! Age Adjusted Pricing for the 5K! Please use the regular 5K registration for children. The price of their registration will be reduced based on registration date at check-out.
The BEF Run for Education is a fantastic, family-friendly event for first-time runners to expert athletes. Proceeds from this event benefit the Benicia Education Foundation, a volunteer-run, community-based non-profit organization that helps fund programs and services at all seven schools in the Benicia Unified School District.
All events highlight Benicia's rich history starting from the beautiful First Street Green. The 5K course is certified by the USATF and professionally timed. Participants will pass historical sights, gorgeous Victorian homes and breathtaking views of the Carquinez Straight. The Kids' Fun-Run, open to children ages 12 and under, runs along the Benicia waterfront.
