From now until April 15, put 2020 way in your rearview mirror with The Bay Race. This running/cycling virtual race challenges you to go 310 miles on your own, wherever you are, alone or in a team. As you gather mileage, we plot your progress around the San Francisco Bay Area, starting at Crissy Field in San Francisco, traveling south through the Silicon Valley, up along the East Bay as far North as Napa and Petaluma. Your workouts, wherever they are, take you along this course. Follow your progress each day. Start now. The Bay Race ends April 15.

The Bay Race is about YOU. Whether you're running, walking, riding on your bike, Peloton, or indoor bike, each 50 miles, you'll receive a Resolution Badge that reflects on what got you through 2020, things like Resilience, Patience, Forward-thinking, and Friendship name a few. By the time you reach the final badge for the last 10 miles, you'll race through the Marin Headlands, roaring, "Heck ya! Bring 2021! It's on!"

How It Works

Taking part in the Bay Race is easy. Just run, walk, bike, Peloton, swim, row, and paddleboard. Your results feed seamlessly from your Apple Watch, Fitbit, Garmin, Peloton, and any other devices using Strava (which is free) into our tracking platform from Socially Distanced Sports (SODISP). Follow yourself on the map of the SF Bay Trail each day and race to finish first. Click here and see what a sample leaderboard with an interactive map looks like!

The Bay Race is meant for everyone, from serious endurance athletes to groups of friends who want to walk as a team. You virtually follow a real course that goes along the San Francisco Bay Trail. Along the way, you'll receive notes about the scenery you would see from our Bay Race Guides. But don’t believe them, these are all places you can also visit if to make your own memories. If you're in the Bay Area, use this as a reason to see places you don't know, or that you haven't seen in a while. Wherever you are, we will race together and share memories on Facebook. Who knows? There may even be a meetup or three.

The Bay Races

The Bay Race starts January 1 and lasts until April 15. You have over 100 days, depending on when you start. The race has 4 Divisions. They are:

  • Run/Walk for runners and walkers. This can be any form of walking or running, including using a treadmill. Miles logged working at home cleaning or working does not count, just activities meant as exercise.
  • Indoor/Outdoor Bike for outdoor cyclists. This can include riding on an indoor trainer and is meant for athletes that log miles on the road or trail on an outdoor bike. "Indoor bike' can be anything from a Peloton or Wahoo to any kind of trainer or stationary bike. It is Winter, after all.
  • NEW Bike/Run/Walk/Swim+ for everyone. Now your Bay Race can combine all the distance you do on your bike (indoors or outdoors) as well as running, walking, swimming, paddle boarding, and rowing.
  • 500k/310-mile Run/Walk Team Challenge all sports. This can be a team of up to 8, biking, walking, running, swimming, rowing, and paddleboarding indoors or out. Again, household chores don't count. This is a great option for friends and co-workers. You can also add team members at any time.

All athletes receive shirts and medals which will be available at Sports Basement locations around the Bay Area. Or we can send yours to you.

Supporting Our Communties

2020 has been hard on all of us, with the toll being felt hardest by those with the fewest resources and the least support. The Bay Race is proud to work with Seneca to support mental health services for youth and families. Uniquely, Seneca serves every community The Bay Race virtually touches, as well as the Central Coast, Southern California, and Washington. The Bay Race Challenge challenges all our athletes to give or raise $100,000 to these communities and you can tailor your giving or fundraising exactly to the communities that mean most to you. The one thing we know for certain in all places: Seneca's model for Unconditional Care could never be more important for a Breakout 2021.
