Join us for the 5th annual Westerville Hunger Heroes 5k and 1 mile run/walk! Saturday October 26, 2019 at Westerville North High School.
The course will be run in the stadium and through the flat grass areas of the school district properties.

The purpose of this event is to educate and raise awareness about food insecurity issues in Westerville and around the country. All the proceeds raised will go to Westerville Area Resource Ministry’s program ShareBacAPac, a charitable foundation to feed Westerville School students over the weekends and the Otterbein University’s Promise House. Both programs are part of 501(C)3 organizations that focus on supporting the Westerville community and especially students who might otherwise go hungry by providing not only food but educational programs and other types of support.

Be a HERO and help the END HUNGER.
Join the run and donate today!

ABOUT

The idea for the event was formulated to involve Otterbein University students in a community engagement project that would directly aid the residents of Westerville. During the 2018-2019 school year over 35.3% or 5,334 students were reported to be economically disadvantage qualifying for school-week free or reduced lunch prices. These same 5,334 students potentially spend the weekends without adequate food. That is where ShareBacAPac comes in.  Teachers, Guidance Counselors and other school personnel contact families to see if their children might benefit from having a weekend bag of food especially packed for them. The bags contain individually sized, easily prepared, nutritious food items to help students avoid hunger over the weekends. The school notifies ShareBacAPac how many bags they need and volunteers from Otterbein and Westerville work together to pack and deliver the bags to the schools for students to take home on Fridays. This past year over 10,000 bags were delivered. Otterbein’s Promise House is a student- led community resource center that serves under-resourced Otterbein students. They offer services to help peers flourish including a community café, campus food pantry, referrals to community resources, peer advocacy, volunteer opportunities, and educational workshops. Both programs are totally donation and grant based organizations so all funds must be generated by the organizations. This event will help to put food in the hands of critical members of the Westerville community and provide education programs to help eliminate hunger.
