Proceeds from the 2026 race will once again benefit the Mountaineer Food Bank, with a portion of the funds specifically supporting their Backpack Program. These programs play a critical role in helping children and families across West Virginia who face food insecurity, ensuring that nutritious food reaches those who need it most.
Last year’s race participants and sponsors helped raise $4,000 for this important cause, directly supporting Mountaineer Food Bank’s efforts to combat hunger in our region. Thanks to the generosity of our community, those funds helped expand access to food for families and children who rely on these services.
Mountaineer Food Bank’s Mobile Pantry program provides food to communities often described as “food deserts,” where access to grocery stores and healthy food options is limited or scarce. Fresh, nutritious foods tend to have a short shelf life, so to ensure quality and timeliness, these items are transported quickly to designated community distribution sites. At these locations, Mountaineer Food Bank staff and volunteers distribute the food directly to individuals and families in need.
Through these Mobile Pantries, families can receive a variety of fresh and nutritious foods, including fruits, vegetables, dairy products, and baked goods—items that are often difficult to access in underserved communities. These distributions not only provide immediate relief but also help promote healthier eating and improved nutrition for households that might otherwise go without.
In addition, Mountaineer Food Bank’s Backpack Program helps ensure that children who rely on school meals during the week have access to food on weekends as well. Backpacks filled with nutritious, easy-to-prepare food are discreetly provided to students so they can return to school on Monday ready to learn and succeed.
By participating in the 2026 race, runners, walkers, sponsors, and volunteers will continue building on last year’s success—helping expand these vital programs and making a meaningful difference in the lives of children and families throughout our community
