Description

The True to the Blue 5K

We invite you to join the True to the Blue 5K on Embry-Riddle’s campus in Daytona Beach on Saturday, October 10, 2020.  The True to the Blue 5K will honor one of Embry-Riddle's first graduates of the Homeland Security program, Ashley Guindon.  Ashley was a Marine Corps veteran who was tragically killed in the line of duty on her first day on the job as a Police Officer serving Prince William County, VA. on February 27, 2016. Funds raised from the 5K Run & Walk will benefit the Ashley Guindon Memorial Scholarship.

COVID-19 Pre-Cautions: Due to COVID-19 requirements we will be implementing some changes for this year's event.  Health checks will be conducted when you arrive on campus.  Participants will have their temperatures checked and answer health questions.  The race will be conducted in wave starts 50 people per wave, with a group of 25 starting at the beginning or the wave, and the second group of 25 starting later in the wave.  You will register for a specific wave when you sign up.  Spectators are discouraged from attending the event.  Masks are required before and after the race.  All participants must wear masks before and immediately after the run.  You will be allowed to remove the masks during the run.

Anyone who falls under or lives with someone in these categories are encouraged to participate virtually:

  • People over 65 years of age
  • People who have chronic lung disease, moderate to severe asthma, or severe heart disease;
  • People who are immunocompromised: those who have undergone or are undergoing cancer treatment, bone marrow or organ transplantation; anyone with immune deficiencies, poorly controlled HIV or AIDS, or had prolonged use of corticosteroids; and smokers;
  • People of any age with class III or severe obesity
  • Anyone diagnosed with the following underlying conditions: diabetes, liver disease, and persons with chronic kidney disease undergoing dialysis.

RACE TIMING AND SCORING: The race will be professionally timed and scored by Runner's High Timing and Race Management. The race will be timed using disposable, electronic tags attached to the bib number. Please wear your bib number to the front, pinned at all four corners, visible, and unaltered.

AWARDS: In accordance with the CDC Guidelines there will be no post race awards ceremony this year. Instead you are your own competition. There will be an accomplishments board at the finish line. Let us know what you accomplished during the race -  maybe a new PR, maybe you ran the whole race, maybe you helped keep a random stranger motivated during the race, or maybe you finished your first 5K ever - no matter what you accomplished on race day we believe there is always something to celebrate.

GROUP DISCOUNTS: Groups of 10 or more please contact Deanna Lebeda dempsed4@erau.edu for group discounts.

Ashley Guindon, one of the first graduates of the ERAU Homeland Security program, was tragically killed in the line of duty on February 27, 2016, her first day on the job as a Police Officer serving Prince William County, VA.

The Security Studies and International Affairs Department is acutely aware that many of the graduates of our program will enter into fields where they may be placed in harm's way. We will remember and honor Ashley, and the others who follow her into public or military service, for their dedication, bravery, and selfless sacrifice in the line of duty.
