What is a virtual race?
A virtual race is a race you can complete anywhere in the world! You choose how, when and where you want to do your race. You don’t even have to do it all in one day! You can walk, run on a treadmill, ride your bike outside, or move in another way. A virtual race allows people of all ages, speeds and abilities to compete without time restrictions and large crowds at traditional races.
Who is the beneficiary?
The beneficiary is the Hoboken Shelter, which is currently on the frontlines of the fight against COVID-19. The shelter is making an enormous impact on our community by serving 530 meals daily, hosting 1,000 showers weekly and sheltering 50 people nightly.
Why is the HoBOOken going virtual?
To respect social distancing during the pandemic and keep our community safe, we made an important decision to go virtual in 2020. The race benefits the Hoboken Shelter, which had been on the front lines during the pandemic and has suffered increased budget costs and loss of revenue from events. We hope you will join us in helping raise funds for this important community organization.
How do I register? Is my registration tax deductible?
You go here to register. We have fees that we hope will allow everyone to participate. We are excited this year to offer a HoBOOken medal for all participants. Everyone deserves a medal after this year. Registrations are not tax deductible unless you select a charity bib and then $60 of your gift is tax deductible. You can also choose to donate to the Shelter directly in addition to signing up, we hope to hit a $30,000 fundraising goal or become a fundraiser and encourage your friends to make a tax deductible donation.
I already signed up for another race in town! Can I do this one too?
Yes! You can run your virtual race alongside your marathon, 5K or other race. We encourage you to get out as often as you can to keep healthy and help good causes.
What do I get when I register?
Well that’s up to you! You can select just the race for the low fee of $15 or you can add a t-shirt for $25, or you can get a t-shirt and medal for $40 and there’s even an option to add a custom, awesome HoBOOken hoodie (typically only available to race event committee members). Kids are $10 and get a t-shirt with their entry. We will also be sending a virtual goodie bag after the race. T-shirt and medal inventory is limited so register early!
How do I get my t-shirt, medal, etc?
More details on bib pickup will be released soon, but we will have multiple locations in town. You can also choose the mail option for $5 add on.
How far is the race?
The race is 3.1 miles, you will have the option to run a route locally in Hoboken or wherever it is you will be. We will be sharing more information on a local suggested route, playlist, kids route info and hashtags and photo sharing information shortly.
How long do I have to complete it?
You have from Monday, October 26 to Monday, Nov. 2
How do you win?
In this year’s HoBOOken 5K Halloween Run there are no winners or losers! Achieve your movement goals and be proud of your determination and progress in achieving them. But, we will have costume contests, fundraising contests and more contests for you to win along with a race celebration, details to follow.
Will there be a virtual awards ceremony?
Yes, we will announce the winners and will have more details about the contests and an awards ceremony coming soon to your inbox.
