In Hawaiian, mālama means "to take care of." The mission of our race is to benefit the people of Hawaiʻi, a community of which has been heavily impacted by the pandemic. With a heavy reliance on tourism, an industry which is now estimated to be down about 65%, the Hawaiian economy is struggling.
100% of our net race proceeds will be donated to the Aloha United Way, a nonprofit organization that has served Hawaiʻi for over 100 years, helping the community build strength and resiliency. They focus on the toughest challenges facing the community at any given time, tackling problems at their roots and supporting solutions that will have lasting, sustainable change. Recent focus has been on COVID-19 relief and many funds and programs were launched last year as part of their efforts. For more information, visit them at www.auw.org
For the safety of our participants, the Mālama Hawaiʻi 5k will be entirely virtual. Choose your own route and (optionally) share your results with everyone on our website . We will have a leaderboard updating as submissions come in so we can see who comes out on top. Everyone is welcome to join including individuals and groups of runners, joggers, and walkers.
The male and female with the fastest time will win a RUN outfit, courtesy of lululemon kalākaua. If you win, we will ask for verification of your results. Acceptable verification methods include fitness tracking tools (like Garmin Connect, Training Peak, Polar, etc) or an image/screenshot from a fitness tracker, GPS watch, tracking app on your phone, or treadmill display.
One of the benefits of a virtual race is the flexibility! The race period is open May 16-22, 2021. Sleep in, find a fun route, and race on your schedule!
