Pieathlon - COVID-19 Update

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic and our concern for the safety of staff and participants, the 2020 Pieathlon has been cancelled.

The Pieathlon’s purpose is to raise funds for our Annual Campaign which supports member’s journeys, not unlike Scott Willey’s, who recently walked over 140,000 steps in one day despite having cerebral palsy and being a thyroid cancer survivor. You can actually follow his journey through the YMCA of Greater Des Moines Facebook page.

Your entry fee can STILL have an impact in helping support more great stories of achievement through the Y.

Your Fee Options:

  •  Donate entry fee to the Annual Campaign (Default option if no reply by May 29, 2020)
  •  Refund- please reply within 30 days (May 29, 2020) to receive a full refund. Refunds will begin to be processed June 1, 2020.

We apologize for any delays due to staffing challenges during this unprecedented time.

Description

The Pieathlon is a great beginner level sprint triathlon, that features a 400m indoor swim, 12 mile bike ride, and 3 mile run. The event is chip timed.

However, the Pieathlon means much more than that.  The event spotlights the benefits of a healthy lifestyle and a community of meaningful relationships, like those found at the Y, on people as they go through difficult life challenges, such as cancer.  Each year, the event spotlights Y members who have become testaments to that.

The Pieathon was founded by Dave Milburn in an effort to honor his wife Penny's cancer survivorship story.  She found support through their Ragbrai friends as she won her battle.  The friends had a tradition of eating pie together at the end of Ragbrai, signifying a journey well done.  Hence, the significance of "Pie" in Pieathlon.

A youth triathlon will take place after all sprint triathlon athletes complete swimming. The youth triathlon will consist of a 200 yard swim, 3 mile bike, and 1 mile run. The youth tri will start 10 min. after the last adult sprint tri swimmer finishes.
