Fri June 4 - Sun June 13 Bluffton, SC 29910 US

Benefiting. All of the proceeds will go to the Environmental Club at the University of South Carolina Beaufort (USCB).

Purpose of the Race.  The Virtual Run for South Carolina Native Trees will act as a public fundraiser to acquire funds for the needed gardening supplies of the project so that 500 trees can be grown and planted principally in Beaufort County.  From increased residential/commercial development as well as past hurricanes, coastal South Carolina has been losing many trees.  The loss of trees has caused the displacement of animals often leading to road kill, poor air quality, destroyed habitats, and diminished natural beauty.  In an effort to restore the lost trees, the Environmental Club at USCB is starting a tree planting initiative to have 500 South Carolina native trees planted by 2022.  Some of the coastal native trees we are working with include:

    1. Red Maple (Acer rubrum)
    2. Redbud (Cercis canadensis)
    3. Black Gum (Nyssa sylvatica)
    4. Baldcypress (Taxodium distichum)
    5. Eastern Red Cedar (Juniperus virginiana)

Race Introduction.  The run series will take place during the 10-day stretch from Friday, June 4th – Sunday, June 13th, 2021 and all races are virtual.  On Day-1 (June 4th), all races will be set at 4:00 AM so that a race could be started.  Available races include two traditional shorter distances (5K  and 10K) and two ultramarathon distances (50K and 100M).  For the ultramarathon challenges, although having the fastest time will win the event, runs do not need to be completed in one day.  It is acceptable to divide miles between days for the specific run event, you can set your pace, and you can choose your favorite route.  Runners will record overall time from the moment the race was started until the time the race was finished.  The basic rules involve either running, walking, or hiking; however, no biking is allowed.  Here are the available distances offered:

  • 5K (3.1 miles)
  • 10K (6.2 miles)
  • Ultramarathon 50K (31.1 miles)
  • Ultramarathon 100M (100 miles)

Each race needs to be timed by recording through a GPS mapping software, examples include Strava or RunKeeper.  Runners will submit their timed results in this online system.

Race Type.  Virtual only.

Race Location.  Runners will choose their favorite course.  We recommend choosing a course that has minimal elevation gains if you think you will be a front-runner.

Award Information.  Any runner in any of the races that completes their respective distance will receive a finisher medal (see the finisher medal artwork found in the "Photos" tab); this medal will be 3" in diameter, made of metal, and the artwork will be painted onto the metal.  Fifty of these medals will be available and guaranteed to the first fifty runners who register.  Runners that register after the 50th registration will receive a different kind of finisher medal.  This medal is a diecast 3D medal being 2" in diameter.  T-shirts will not be provided in this virtual run nor will podium awards be provided either.  For the 100-mile ultramarathon race distance, in addition to receiving the finisher medal, runners will also receive a 100M premium crystal finisher award that includes the runner's name and overall time (see the premium crystal award in the "Photos" tab; note: there are male and female options for the running logo).
