Mihretu

I am 21 years old and I live in Kore, Addis Ababa.  Before joining the International Samaritan program, I used to go to Kore garbage dump to collect sellable materials.  I have always had an interest in athletics- especially running. Ever since I was very young, I trained and participated in different competitions. I even won the bronze medal for running in one of his recent competitions!

In addition to the thrill of its competitive nature, exercise is a form of therapy for me.  No matter how stressed out or unhappy I feel, I start feeling better once I begin exercising.  Even during this time of pandemic, I didn’t stop training. I spent my time reading and exercising.  I merely avoided doing exercises with my teammates but continued to practice by myself.  I make sure that I adapt my body to different terrains so I exercises at Entoto, Koyefeche and other areas that have relatively challenging and difficult weather conditions.  I run from 3000 meters to 21 k. Running with people from around the world is like a dream coming true for me.

Samri

I am a first-year science student at Hawassa University.  I am also the founder and leader of a girls empowerment club of fellow International Samaritan scholars in Ethiopia where high school and college students! In my group, girls can share their experiences, strengthen their bonds of sisterhood and stand as one when it comes to issues affecting women and girls. Our goals are to use creative arts to amplify their voice of girls, organize discussion forums about gender-based violence, coordinate a big sister program, read books on self-care and self-love, and support the needy and sick elderly people in the community.  I ran one race in high school and am looking forward to meeting others as I train for this race.

Zelalem

I am 20 years old and am a second year Psychology student at Gondar University. Born and raised in Kore area, I am an avid reader of books.  As a child, everywhere I looked was hardship and I knew from an early age that the only way I could improve the life of my family was through education. I worked hard on my studies despite many obstacles I faced and managed to get into University. When I found that I made it, I had mixed feelings. I felt proud and happy but was also scared and worried as I did not know how I could possibly cover my college expenses. That is when International Samaritan came and changed everything. I couldn’t believe my luck. All my school costs until today are covered for me and my dream of attaining a higher education has come true.

I usually work out 3 times a week, but I've never done 5k before!  I am excited to see my physical endurance put to the test.  I have been spending most of my time exercising and reading at home in addition to volunteering at the International Samaritan library.
