Description

Join us for the 10th Anniversary of the Murky Mile Open Water Swim Races presented by Pannell Swim Shop on Saturday, August 27, 2022 at beautiful Cave Run Lake near Morehead, Kentucky.  3 Race Divisions --- 2.4 Mile Iron Distance, 1 Mile "Murky Mile" and 1/2 Mile "Murky Half".  NEW for this year is the Float Relay, a special event to help celebrate the 10th year of this open water event.

Continuing for 2022

  • Murky Mile Age Group Awards  The top male and female finisher for the Murky Mile race in the designated age category receives an award.  Age category is based on age on the day of the race.  (There are no age group awards for the 1/2 Mile and Ironman Distance races.)
    16 & Under, 17-25, 26-35, 36-45, 46-55, 56+
  • Chip Timing & Streaming Live Results - We've partnered with the RaceRise team to offer chip times and immediate results & scoring again for 2022. 
  • FORM A TEAM FOR OUR MURKY TEAM CHALLENGE - Register and form a team for our Murky Mile Team Challenge.  Your team can be composed of 3 or more (as many as you want) male or female swimmers (no gender restrictions/requirements) all competing in the Murky Mile race division.  Your team score will be the combined individual swimmer's times.  

DESCRIPTION

  • The 1/2 mile and 1 mile swim is a out and back.
  • The 2.4 mile swim is a two loop swim.
  • The Float Relay is made up of 2 people and any floatation devise can be used. This event is not timed, awards will be given for the first place team, last place team, and most creative floats.

EVENTS

  • The 2.4 Mile Swim will begin at 8:30am with all swimmers going off in one group; swimmers must check in by 8am; mandatory pre-race meeting will be held at 8:20am
  • The 1 Mile Swim will begin at 9:30am; swimmers must check in by 9am; mandatory pre-race meeting will be held at 9:20am
  • The 1/2 Mile Swim will begin at 9:45am; swimmers must check in by 9:15am; mandatory pre-race meeting will be held at 9:35am
  • The Float Relay will begin at 10:30am

* There will be body marking and swimmers are required to wear a swim cap (provided by the race) with your athlete number on it.

* Race chips will be handed out (as will shirts and swim caps) on race morning.

COURSES

The 1/2 Mile, 1 Mile and 2.4 Mile courses are configured in out-and-back style loops, marked by large buoys on the corners and sighting buoys in between.  The 2.4 Mile course is a double loop. The start is in-water, waist deep, and the finish takes place on the beach. 

RULES

Current U.S. Masters Swimming rules will govern this event. Swimmers must wear the swim cap provided, have their race numbers on their arms, and follow all announced safety rules without exception.  Wetsuits/skin suits will be permitted.

ENTRIES

Online registration will remain open until Friday, August 26th at 8pm.  After that time the only way to register is in person on race morning beginning at 7am and prior to the start of your race (cash, check, credit card accepted).

ENTRY FEES

The below entry fees cover safety (water craft, EMTs), shirts, finisher's medals, swag, awards, chip timing and post-race food & drink. There is one price increases on the 2nd on August 2th. Must register by August 17 to be guaranteed a shirt. The Float Relay is an additional $20 per individual.

CHIP TIMING

Our 2022 races will be chip timed by RaceRise.  Each swimmer will wear an ankle bracelet with a chip attached.  The races will go off as a gun start and chip finish.  Results will stream online and each participant who provides his/her cell number will receive a text notification at the finish. Chips will not be utilized for the Float Relay.

SAFETY

For safety reasons, those not able to complete the 2.4 Mile distance in 2 hours 30 minutes are advised not to enter; you will be listed in the results as DNF if you exceed this time. Safety support will be coordinated with professional emergency services and volunteers. Swimmers will be briefed on all safety aspects before the start of the race. Race officials have the authority to postpone or cancel the event for safety reasons.  

REFUND POLICY

There are no refunds or deferrals for this event, no exceptions. In the case of inclement weather or other unexpected circumstances, the race director has the right to cancel the race or shorten the event. In this case there will be no refunds provided. In signing up for this event, the participants are agreeing to these terms.

CHECK IN & MANDATORY MEETING

All swimmers must check in at the starting location at least 30 minutes prior to the scheduled start of the race. All swimmers will be required to attend the final pre-race briefing 10 minutes before the start of their race. Failure to arrive on time for the briefing could result in disqualification.

 

 

 

Cave Run Lake --- Our Murky Mile Open Water Races Venue

Cave Run Lake, located south of Morehead, Kentucky, USA along Kentucky Route 801, is an 8,270-acre (33 square km), reservoir built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The 148 ft (45 m), half-mile (800 m) dam (and outlet works) construction began in 1965 and was completed in 1973. Cave Run Lake is in the northern part of the Daniel Boone National Forest.  Cave Run Lake provides flood protection to the lower Licking River valley, supplies water to the area's communities, improves the Licking River's water flow conditions, and offers a habitat for various species of fish and wildlife. It is in Rowan, Morgan, Menifee, and Bath counties.
