In December of 2019, Susan Willand saved her boyfriend after he suffered a stroke while sleeping and then cared for him in the hospital over the next several days. Then, very unexpectedly, Sue went missing without a word to anyone. Her family, friends, community, and the Chelmsford police launched a massive search for her. It is with deep sadness to say that Sue had unfortunately drowned in the local river, and was found in January of 2020.

Sue was an amazing person, a beloved mother, sister, aunt, and friend. She raised her daughter as a single mother helping her all the way through college and beyond. She was a caring sister who maintained close relationships with her siblings and relatives, hosting dinners and parties all the time. She was the cool aunt, who took her nieces and nephews to concerts and races and baseball games. Sue was the life of the party making close friendships everywhere she went, while supporting friendships from her childhood. One of the most prominent characteristics of Sue was her love of running, especially running races.

We aren’t sure just how many races Sue participated in, we have a box of bibs she collected with over 67 bibs, and we know there were more. Sue ran for charities, especially breast cancer research races in honor of her mother who passed away from breast cancer. Sue even traveled to Dublin Ireland with her boyfriend to run a 5k. There seems to be no better way to honor Sue’s exuberant life than to do what she loved to do on what would have been her 57th birthday.

Smiles for Miles was conceived by Sue’s close family members in February of 2020 with the hopes of having the first 5k in June of that year. Of course, all plans changed with the COVID pandemic shutting our world down. Over the last two years, Sue's family continued to make plans for the 5k to happen and were thrilled when everything came together for June of 2022. And to have the inaugural 5k on Sue’s birthday is a wonderful way to celebrate her life!

Smiles for Miles is a non-profit effort by Sue’s family to honor her memory and celebrate her life with family, friends, and community doing what Sue loved in life. All profits from this event will go to local charities in Sue’s honor.
