Sugarloaf Marathon & 15K Cancelled

Dear Runners,

Thank you for your patience while we have worked to evaluate our options with the Sugarloaf Marathon and 15k. We have been working with our vendors, partners, and various stakeholders to determine the best course of action for our runners, and for the health and well-being of our staff and local community.

Unfortunately, due to current circumstances and guidance from health officials, we have made the decision to cancel this year’s Sugarloaf Marathon and 15k. We explored many options for the races, including postponing them to a later date, but ultimately determined that this was the best decision for everyone involved in this event.

As a registered runner you have a few options:

  • You can defer your registration to 2021 or 2022 at no charge through your RunSignUp account.
  • You can transfer your registration to a friend for 2021 or 2022 at no charge through your RunSignUp account.
  • You can choose to donate your registration fee to the Sugarloaf Region Charitable Trust through your RunSignUp account.
  • If none of the options listed above works for you, you can receive a refund for your registration, minus a 6%  processing fee, through your RunSignUp account. *Please see below for refund eligibility.

The deadline to act on any of the options listed above is May 17, 2020. If you take no action before May 17, your registration will automatically be deferred, and will be non-refundable.

*All refunds will be processed shortly after May 17th. We want to clarify who is eligible for refunds as we are beginning to receive some questions. Refunds can only be processed on 2020 registration fees and 2020 deferral fees. All other transactions remain nonrefundable. This would include registration fees and deferral fees paid for the 2019 race. Transactions paid over a year ago are nonrefundable.

If you pre-paid for the pasta dinner, you will automatically receive a refund for this add-on shortly after the May 17th deadline.

If you have a lodging reservation booked through Sugarloaf, you will automatically receive a full refund in the coming weeks. If you have additional questions about your reservation, you can contact us at 800-THE-LOAF for assistance. If you have lodging booked through a third party or different property, you will need to contact them directly to inquire about any possible refunds or credits.

It may go without saying, but this was not an easy decision to make. The marathon is an important economic driver for our community, and generates more than $20,000 dollars each year for the Sugarloaf Charitable Trust, which distributes money to local charities. We have created an option for runners to donate their registration fees to the Trust, which will benefit our local community at a crucial time. If this is an option for you, we thank you for considering it. Click here to learn more about the Sugarloaf Charitable Trust.

Thank you all for your continued support, stay healthy, and we hope to see you here in 2021.

Here Are Your Options:

We will send you a code that you can use to register for free in 2021 or 2022. This code does not guarantee your spot, so please be sure to register when the time comes. You should expect to receive the code via email soon before registration opens in the fall. The code is good for only one registration and will expire by January 1, 2022. If you don’t intend to run and prefer to transfer your registration, you may simply share your code with a friend to use instead.

If you pre-paid for the pasta dinner, you will be automatically refunded for this in the coming weeks.

The marathon is one of the principal fundraisers for the Sugarloaf Region Charitable Trust, contributing more than $20,000 to the Trust annually. The Charitable Trust distributes money to local non-profit organizations in the Sugarloaf community – a particularly crucial function during the times we’re in. This option allows you to donate your registration fee to the Trust to help fill the hole left by this cancellation. If this is an option for you, we thank you for considering it.

If neither of the options listed above works for you, you can receive a full refund for your registration, minus a 6% processing fee. If you pre-paid for the pasta dinner, you will be automatically refunded for this. If you have a lodging reservation, you will automatically receive a refund in the coming weeks.

All refunds will be processed shortly after May 17th.

Description

With the event turning 38 years old in 2020, the Sugarloaf Marathon is Maine’s oldest continuously run marathon, drawing hundreds of runners from all over the U.S. and Canada. Registration for the 2020 race will open on October 1, 2019 and will close on May 1, 2020 or when the event sells out.

Despite the mountainous surrounding, Sugarloaf's course is widely known as a fast course. The final 16 miles of the course have an elevation loss of 980 feet. It is common for runners to have personal best times on this course. With the race course winding along the beautiful Carrabassett River, the Sugarloaf race course has one of the most beautiful scenic backdrops in New England.

The Sugarloaf Marathon is an official qualifier for the Boston Marathon and USATF certified.
