Described by the Ojibwe as Mishigamaa, or Great Water, Lake Michigan makes a complete transformation each Winter in the cold Northern climate of the Upper Peninsula. The protected Little Bay de Noc on Lake Michigan freezes completely solid every year, creating an expansive winter wonderland. Racers will start the adventure on the ice in front of the Terrace Bay Hotel and ski or run with their choice of footwear (snowshoes, boots, running shoes with ice cleats) across the ice sheet to turn around at the Gladstone beach to return back to the Terrace Bay Hotel, completing the 5.2 mile course. Runners looking for a slightly shorter option will start at the hotel and run 1 mile out into the frozen lake to return back to the hotel for a 2 mile course. Participants will be greeted at the finish line with a finisher medal, hot food, hot cocoa, refreshing locally brewed Upper Hand beer and a toasty bonfire to stay warm.
