The Cherokee Choices Mother's Day 5K Run/Walk is a benefit for the Cherokee Children’s Home. The Cherokee Children’s Home was started in 1969 when it became evident in the community that children who could not safely remain in their own homes and needed a place to stay within the Qualla Boundary. Upon the completion of the first home, 17 children were admitted and the house was quickly at capacity. That same year construction began on the second home and it was completed in 1970 and it quickly filled with 17 more children. A final home was built the next year and it also filled to capacity. Since those early days many steps have been taken to ensure the safety of children not only from the Qualla Boundary but now throughout the state. The Cherokee Children’s Home has been a permanent or temporary home to over 1,700 youth. Please learn more about their support services at Home's website.
100% of the funds raised by the Cherokee Choices Mother's Day 5K Run/Walk supports the Home's primary goal - the reunification of the children with their families. Please support the Cherokee Children’s Home by adding a donation to your registration or click on the DONATE button above.
Kituwah is known as the Mother Town of the Cherokee People. Hundreds of years ago, Kituwah Mound held the Council House and the first fire. Around the mound was the Cherokee village. During the time of the Removal (1830’s), the land was taken from the Cherokee including Kituwah. Just within the last 25 years, the land has been returned the People. Today it is many acres of farm land, although there is no village, the People use the land for gardens, dancing ceremonies and other important events.
