Benefiting Charity: The Carcinoid Cancer Foundation-In Memory of Sister Mary Norman

Monies raised from the Krispy Kreme Challenge Race will go to the *Carcinoid Cancer Foundation in memory of Sister Mary Norman. Sister Mary Norman was a Maryvale Sister who worked in the Lincolnton and Hickory areas for over 30 years. Although she was a Catholic, Sister was open to all faiths and led special ecumenical book studies and offered her assistance with youth ministries in numerous churches to help bring youths belonging to different churches together. Sister also offered no cost spiritual direction and counseling to many people of all faiths and was available day or night to help in a crisis. Her gentleness, genuine smile, and helpfulness filled everyone whose lives she touched with happiness and hope, and she brought joy to countless people throughout western North Carolina. Sister passed away on August 21, 2016 from carcinoid tumors, and she has left a huge void in the lives of all those who knew her.

*The Carcinoid Cancer Foundation is the oldest nonprofit carcinoid/and related neuroendocrine tumor organization in the United States, founded in 1968. The mission of this foundation is to increase awareness and educate the general public and healthcare professionals regarding carcinoid and related neuroendocrine tumors (NETs), to support NET cancer patients and their families, and to serve as patient advocates. The carcinoid tumor, its syndromes and several even rarer neuroendocrine tumor syndromes are the areas of focus for this foundation. The outreach and educational activities of the foundation have grown exponentially since this website was first established in 1996.
In summary, the Foundation, which was founded in 1968:

  • Encourages research
  • Provides information and educational materials for medical professionals, patients, and caregivers
  • Provides e-mail and toll-free telephone support
  • Continually works to improve access to accurate and up-to-date information
  • Serves as advocates for the carcinoid/NET community
  • Participates as one of the founding members in the International Neuroendocrine Cancer Alliance (INCA)
