The annual Night of Light 5K and Family Faith Run/Walk is a beautifully festive event that takes place in downtown Morganton.
The evening run takes place the first Saturday in December and is geared toward giving families a fun activity to participate in together while celebrating the holiday season and benefiting local nonprofit organizations. The open-race route begins and ends at FUMC, located at 200 N. King St., Morganton, NC.
Families are encouraged to come dressed in their most festive holiday-themed gear and join us for a holly jolly good time.
Awards are given to the runners who have the most festive attire. A competition also is held between local schools, which ever one brings the most participants will receive an award. Age Group and Overall Awards are also given to 5K Participants.
5K participants are guaranteed to receive a long sleeved race t-shirt and a participation medal if registered by 11/15/19.

Is there on site or Race Day Registration?
Yes, On-Line Registration will close on 12/05/2019 at noon but On-Site Registration will be available on Friday December 6th from 5pm-7pm and Saturday (Race Day) December 7th from 4pm-5pm.
How do I get my race packet?
Packet Pick Up will be held Friday, December 6th from 5:00-7:00 PM in the Fellowship Hall at FUMC. You can also pick up on race day Saturday, December 7th from 4:00-5:00 PM. Due to the crowd we strongly encourage you to pick up your packet on Friday.
Can you mail the packets/goodie bags?
No, unfortunately we cannot. We will however keep it for you to pick up at a later date if needed and arranged with the office.
Can someone else pick up my packet/bag for me?
Yes, that is not a problem.
Will there be water along the course?
We will have one water station at the church. Runners will pass this station two more times as they run this route.
Can a family member, friend, dog cross the finish line with me?
We share in the joy of your accomplishment as you near the finish line, but for your safety and the safety of fellow participants around you, we ask that you refrain from running with those not registered for the race.
Are pets permitted in the race?
No, pets are not allowed. This is to ensure runner safety.
Are scooters, skateboards, skates allowed in the race?
No, this is a running race. For safety reasons, all bikes (aside from the official support bikers), scooters, skateboards, and skates will not be allowed.
Are baby joggers, strollers or pets allowed during the race?
Of course, this is a family event. If you do choose to run with a baby jogger, you must seed yourself in the back behind all other runners. It is your responsibility to make sure your baby jogger does not impede other runners, and you must take extra precaution to ensure your safety, your child’s safety, and the safety of the runners around you.
What is a Ghost Runner and are they dangerous?
Ghost Runners are actually very friendly as long as they don’t have to go out and run three miles through the streets of Morganton.
The Ghost Runner option allow those individuals that are unable to attend the actual Night of Light Race, or who do not wish to run, the opportunity to still participate. This is a great option for non runners too so everyone can still get in on all the fun!
These lovely people sign up for the race to support the cause and we happily give them our heartfelt thanks and one of our awesome race shirts.
The proceeds of the Ghost Runner registrations will benefit FUMC Missions, the Family Relief Fund and a third local charity as our three beneficiaries of the Night of Light Race.

Can I run with my child in the Family Faith Run?
Yes. One parent or guardian may run with their child during the Family Faith Run.
Do all finishers receive a medal?
Yes, all 5K finishers receive a medal. We will also offer the Family Faith Run kids a small token style medal to signify their finishing of the fun run. It is not the same medal as the 5K.
If I registered for the 5K but could not attend can I still receive my Goodie Bag, Shirt and Medal?
You can come by the church office to pick up your bag and shirt at a later date if arranged with the church office. You will not however receive a finishers medal unless you finish the 5K.
Can I wear headphones?
We strongly discourage the wearing of music devices. Participants must be alert to their surroundings and able to hear what might be going on around them. For your safety and the safety of those around you, we strongly urge you to run headphone-free. We will also have music along the route that you might otherwise miss out on.
Where can I park?
Parking for the event can be located all around FUMC in the back FUMC parking lot, Martha’s Park parking lot, Recreation Center parking lot, etc.
Can I defer my race entry to next year if I am unable to run this year?
No, participants cannot defer their entries to the next year in the event they are unable to run.
Is this event timed?
5K Runners will be chip timed from start to finish.
Is this course certified?
The 5K course is not currently certified but has been measured by many methods and registers at 3.1 miles.
Where does the race start and finish?
The race starts and finishes in front of First United Methodist Church.
What do you do in the event of rain?
This event is rain or shine.
What are the groups?
We have set up groups for the schools in Burke County. The school with the most participants at the race each year wins a special Night of Light trophy!
Can we dress up festive for this race?
YES!!! Please dress up festive for this race!! We cannot wait to see how creative you get! We even have a contest, the runner with the most festive costume wins a special Night of Light trophy!
Are there Age Group Awards?
We have an incredible Awards Ceremony and amazing post race food.

What is the Night of Light Kids Track Club?
First United Methodist Church in partnership with the North Carolina School for the Deaf plans to host the first annual Night of Light Track Club in 2018. The Night of Light Track Night is free and open to all children ages 1-12 in our community. We will have four monthly Track Club Meetings in 2018 beginning in August leading up to the 2018 Night of Light Race. The 2018 dates are August 13th, September 10th, October 8th and November 12th and will be held from 6:00pm - 7:00pm at the NCSD Track. Water and fruit will be available at every meet. At the first meeting kids will be given a Night of Light Track Club T-Shirt. At the last meeting kids will receive a medal. Parents MUST stay with their children at Track Club meets. This is open to kids of all abilities and there will not be any official timing. The mission of kids track night is to promote running as well as to provide opportunities and guidance in the sport. Our mission is to bring together the community and have running FUN!
