Grindfest is one long progression run originally developed in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 2013. The race/workout has now been spread all over the world, arriving in Portland in 2019, and serving as a mark of one final force majeure before the training logs reset to zero.

The rules are simple - start at either 8 minute mile pace (wave 1) or 7 minute mile pace (wave 2) and progress 3 seconds / lap every 1200 meters (at the end of 3 laps). For example - for the 8 minute group - start at 2:00 / lap for 3 laps, then progress to 1:57 / lap for the next 3 laps. You stay in as long as you can until you can no longer grind the pace down any further and you wave the white flag.

For the purposes of this collective effort, the workout/race must be done on a 400 meter track. Race it alone or with friends who know how to grind.

Due to the virtual nature of this race/workout/bananarama - hit your lap split button each lap so we get a true sense of how this all played out.

If you miss a split by running either too fast or too slow, try to use the next 2 laps to try to catch back up / slow back down to what the 1200 split should be for that section. (eg if you run a 90 second lap and you were supposed to hit 92, slow down the next lap to correct the mistake).

The cumulative total for each 1200 split (3 laps) is ultimately what you're aiming to see on the stopwatch. If you can't progress each 1200 split at least 6 seconds faster than the previous 1200 split - it may be time to call it a day and go celebrate 2021 early.

The logistics:

1) Participants register individually

2) Once registered, you will receive a text message and race welcome email. In the email and text message will be instructions on how to submit results.

3) Participants will have until December 31st, 2021 11:59pm to run the workout and upload their Strava or Garmin Connect activity link. They can also submit results via the welcome text message they will get.

Good luck and keep grinding!
