Join us on Sunday, October 14, 2018 at 9:00 AM for our 3rd Annual Jackson’s Heroes’ 5K and Family Fun Walk/Run in honor of 3-year-old Jackson Silas Cole.
Our mission is to remember the life of Jackson Silas Cole who tragically lost his life in a drowning accident in June 2016. In order to honor and remember Jackson, we have chosen to give back to the community in his name. In particular, we have partnered with the YMCA and their 2nd Grade Swim Initiative program in hopes that we can be a hero to a child and help provide him/her with the skills necessary to become a safe swimmer.
Why we have chosen the YMCA: Participation in formal lessons can reduce the risk of drowning by 88% in kids ages 1-4 years. The YMCA is one of the leading water instruction organizations in the United States, dedicated to helping reduce the incidence of drowning through education and practical swim instruction for individuals of all ages. They serve the community as a resource in aquatic education and water safety through student-centered swim instruction. Through the YMCA, children learn and practice new swim skills that last a lifetime, and swimmers of all ages, as a result of the YMCA’s emphasis on water safety, become more comfortable and secure around water.
The YMCA’s 2nd Grade Swim Initiative: The goal of the 2nd Grade Swim Initiative program is to emphasize basic water safety skills. This program grew from the Y-USA’s scientifically-based “Safety Around Water” program. Between 5 and 7% of children are identified as needing additional water/swim skills, and through this program, the YMCA is working to ensure that all children have access to resources that help them acquire the skills they need. More than 1,000 children participated in the program during the 2016-2017 school year in collaboration with the Central Bucks and Centennial School Districts. Plans are underway to include all Bucks County schools in the next 3 - 5 years.
Everyone from the competitive runner to the recreational runner or walker is welcome to join us. We will have music, kids' activities, face painting, awards, and more. Every pre-registered participant (before September 30) will receive a Jackson's Heroes cape. Don't be shy! Come dressed as your favorite superhero (Spiderman, Wonder Woman, Batman, a police officer, a medic, a dispatcher, or a firefighter, etc.) because as Jackson proved, there is a superhero inside of each and every one of us.
