Pheidippides Challenge

Only a few hours into his journey, Pheidippides has reached his first seaside view at the Gulf of Elefsina. He'll run alongside the sea for some 35 miles, extending to the Megara Gulf. While it may look beautiful in the Gulf of Elefsina, you probably don't want to go for a dip just yet. Some 27 ships - cargo ships, ferries, cruise ships, and more - have been abandoned and/or sunk in the gulf over the years, many of which have been leaking petroleum products and other toxic waste. Recently the Greek government started a process to have the ships removed from the water to prevent further damage to the environment and to remove navigational hazards for other watercraft.
