The PRC Eco Initiative presents The 1st Annual Earth Day 5K at Palmetto Bluff. This will be the first Sustainable running event of the year!
-100% of proceeds from this race will benefit the Palmetto Bluff Conservancy, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of the natural, historical and cultural resources of the Bluff. The Conservancy at Palmetto Bluff was founded in 2003 with a mission of protecting the lush maritime forests and winding tidal creeks that defined the spectacular geography of the land that is home to Palmetto Bluff. By maintaining the ecological and environmental integrity of the lands at the confluence of the May, Cooper and New Rivers, we're able to ensure that the ancient Maritime Forest or Live Oak and Palmetto are almost exactly as William Hilton saw them 400 years ago. https://www.palmettobluff.com/about/conservancy

Race shirts: All participants will receive a commemorative tech shirt. Our race shirts are 100% recycled from 8 plastic bottles produced by local apparel company, Recover Brands. Essentially, we’re not using water bottles, and we’re re-purposing those that have already been used in the world. The easiest way to put it is that we’re closing the loop of sustainability all through running a few miles around this beautiful community. And yes, because they’re local, we’re crushing our carbon footprint in one more way thanks to you.
Sustainable Race: Only Bio-degradable, compostable cold cups (corn plastic) made from (PLA) an Eco friendly corn based resin are be provided at all water stations and After Party. Beaufort County has amazing water and we’re utilizing it. All drinking water for the water stops and finish line will be donated by BJWSA reducing the carbon footprint by taking away any and all shipping and production.
After Party: Local Food Trucks will be here and Local River Dog Brewing.
Awards: 100% Recycled medals to top 3 in each age group. 12U, 13-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70+
2020 PRC Eco-Initiative:
In just one calendar year, the apparel and footwear industries account for an estimated 8% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions. That’s nearly 4 metric gigatons of carbon dioxide emitted into the atmosphere each year. In the face of various environmental, social, and governmental challenges, the run specialty industry, and its respective retailers, must adopt new strategies in an effort to reduce our carbon footprint and extend the life of our planet.
To do our part, Palmetto Running Company is launching the PRC Eco-Initiative. For 2020 and beyond, it is our collective goal to purchase and sell more sustainable, recycled, and eco-friendly products as well as find new ways to improve the sustainability of our planet and more directly, our local environment.
More sustainable products include apparel and footwear composed of fibers with lower environmental impact such as cotton using regenerative organic agriculture practices, emerging materials such as algae and wild rubber that use less energy and fossil fuel dependent processes, and recommerced fibers such as recycled water bottles available now thanks to new chemical recycling processes.
In April of 2020 we plan to partner with local charities to put on a week's worth of events revolving around the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day. Kicking off with a community clean-up of our local May River and an in-store sustainable product promotion and finishing out the week with an Earth Day 5K. Proceeds from these events will be given back to the community.
Through holding these events, as well as promoting our expansion in eco-friendly products, we strive to raise awareness about the importance of sustainability within our industry all in hopes of both bringing together our community.
