As we all know, COVID-19 is a major concern with gatherings and mitigating the spread of the virus.  The 2020 Shakori 40 has received permission to host the race as long as we are encouraging people to follow the 3 Ws, Wear your mask when you cannot social distance, wash your hands and wait 6ft apart.

The Shakori Hills Community Art Center has 6 fields that we will be using for athletes and teams to use to space out.  Under the mass gatherings policies when in open spaces we will follow the 12 persons per 1000 square feet rule.

Field 1: 477,481 sq ft.
Field 2: 279,841 sq ft
Field 3: 88,200 sq ft
Field 4: 269,361 sq ft
Field 5, 1,046,529 sq ft
Staging area for race exchanges and start finish - 94,249

ADDITIONAL COVID PROTOCOLS WE ARE FOLLOWING

  • 40 mile open runners will start 6ft apart.  While on course runners will be able to social distance
  • 40K open runners will start 6ft apart.  While on course runners will be able to social distance
  • Relay teams: only 1 runner from each team will be running at a time which keeps people separated enough throughout the day
  • Bathrooms will be cleaned every hour
  • Athletes must wear a mask while on the Shakori grounds when they are not at their campsite
  • Campsites and team set up areas can utilize large fields at the Shakori fairgrounds to stay spread apart
  • We are outside and in open air, athletes must use good judgement on waiting 6ft apart
  • Teams and individuals will be subject to disqualification and asked to leave if compliance is ignored.
  • The aid station will have all bottled water and Gatorade
  • Athletes will be encouraged to use their own aid at their own campsite that can be set up along the course as well to avoid sharing spickets and cups.
  • Athletes will only be allowed at Shakori, this will NOT be a spectator friendly event.  

EO141 Section 9 C.  Treatment under Mass Gathering Limit:  In this situation, and only in this situation: 1) entertainers, performers, and athletes, along with coaches, training, support, and broadcast staff, shall not count toward Mass Gathering limit and 2) employees and other workers at the facilities where entertainment and sporting events occur also shall not count toward the Mass Gathering limit.
