Description

The Hip Hop 5K has been created to aid in promoting awareness and fundraising to assist the International Hip Dysplasia Institute (IHDI) in finding more efficient methods of diagnosis and less invasive surgical forms of treatment to hopefully minimize the severe physical and mental repercussions of hip dysplasia. The IHDI is a 501 (c) 3 organization that is dedicated to improving the health and quality of life for those affected by hip dysplasia.

Hip dysplasia affects thousands of newborns, children, and adults each year. In fact, 1 in 10 infants are born with hip instability, 1 in 100 infants are treated with hip dysplasia, and 1 in 500 infants are born with completely dislocated hips. Hip dysplasia means that the bones of the hip joint are not aligned correctly and this prevents the hip joint from functioning properly and the joint wears out much faster than normal, much like a car’s tires will wear out faster when they are out of alignment. Hip dysplasia is a silent condition which means pain is not normally felt until much later stages, making it harder to detect and treat.

Hip dysplasia is the #1 cause of hip arthritis, which is more often than not leads to hip replacements. Additionally, 5% of all hip replacement surgeries performed are due to hip dysplasia. What is even more alarming is that more than 90% of the young or adult cases cannot be diagnosed in childhood through utilizing the current methods of screening. In spite of the frequency of hip dysplasia in babies and the potential for life-long disability the awareness of this condition is poor outside of the medical profession. Early diagnosis, prevention, and simple treatment is the best solution, however many hip dislocations are difficult to treat with the current methods of care.

Surgical treatment for hip dysplasia is long, tiring, painful, invasive, and in many cases multiple surgeries are needed. The physical, mental, emotional, and financial struggles of this condition that impact families is often overwhelming and the Hip Hop 5K hopes the aid IHDI in changing that.

Please help us in our fight against hip dysplasia! I look forward to seeing you on race day!!
