Additional Event Information

SVDP is a lay Catholic organization that aspires to live the gospel message by serving Christ in the poor with love, respect, justice, hope and joy, and by working to shape a more just and compassionate society.  In the 23-county Columbus Diocese, SVDP aids our community members by providing emergency assistance to persons in need, including:

  • Food (St Lawrence Haven Food Line and multiple parish-based food pantries),
  • Clothing (SVDP Clothing Center)
  • Shelter (St Vincent Haven Newark)
  • Rent and utility assistance, medical expense assistance
  • Funeral assistance through a Funeral Fund
  • Furniture assistance through the Furniture Bank of Central Ohio.

We sponsor Getting Ahead in a Just-Gettin'-By World sessions to allow persons in poverty to examine their lives and resources, and determine for themselves what resources to build and how to create their own future story. Our Microloan Program gives persons the opportunity to acquire low-interest loans between $500 and $1000.  Financial mentoring is provided during the term of the loan.  Successful repayment increases the credit score of the loan recipient.  We also sponsored the development of the Vincentian Ohio Action Network, an organization that gives low-income persons the opportunity to be leaders in their community on issues impacting their lives.  Among the Issues that VOAN members have addresses include barriers faced by returning citizens (jobs, housing, etc), payday lending, and broadband access in rural communities.  These issues have been addressed primarily at the local and state levels.
