This certainly isn’t the letter we looked forward to writing, but considering the Center for Disease Control’s (CDC) updated guidance for group gatherings over 50 people released 3/15/2020, we have made the decision to postpone our annual 5K race. https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/community/large-events/mass-gatherings-ready-for-covid-19.html.

It is also important to note that our race begins and ends at our clinic – a clinic that the North Texas relies on for addressing our community’s orthopedic needs. To go against the guidance of the CDC for an elective event and to place additional risk to our healthcare entity is not wise, no matter the level of excitement and amount of preparation from staff, volunteers, and sponsors.

For registered participants, we will be contacting you shortly to discuss refund options. We would encourage you to consider our partnered charity “Doctors Without Borders” for re-directing your support: https://www.doctorswithoutborders.org/

A few commonly asked questions:

1.       Why don’t you hold a virtual event? We believe a virtual event would not be the preference of our runners and vendors. Additionally, we believe returning money to participants is important, given the unknown economic impact they may have/will be incurring during this period.

2.       What if the CDC changes their guidance? This would be great news, in that the COVID-19 scenario would be showing improvement! However, the City of Plano Special Event Permit department is currently only meeting bi-weekly to assess pending permits. No permits in the next two weeks are being issued, as the Mayor has declared a Public Health Emergency. In the unlikely event that CDC reduces their guidance by over 50%, there still remains a significant chance that a permit would not be issued prior to the race.

3.       Do I still get a t-shirt/bag/tacos? Full refunds are being provided to the participants, and therefore no merchandise or tacos this time around.

4.       When will we know about the rescheduled date? If rescheduled, we will send invitations through e-mail. The most likely time will be in Fall 2020, although this is not guaranteed. You will need to re-register at that time.

The refund process is being finalized with our registration vendor. You will be kept current as we better understand the appropriate steps.

We had a great time the last couple of years...lets do it again! Mi Cocina will be returning with their food truck to provide a lunch, Mambo Taxi, and drinks at the finish line for all of our runners. (Yes, you read this correctly...lunch and drinks are included in your entry fee!!) For all non-runners, Mi Cocina will be happy to serve you, too...but you will need to bring your favorite credit card!
