Yoga and Cycling

We will offer Yoga with Chris Briney on specific days during the ride.

Chris, is one of the most extensively trained and well-versed yoga instructors in the Metro Detroit area. He is known as a “teacher of teachers,” and holds the highest level of certification of any male yoga teacher in the state. An ardent yoga practitioner for 20 years, Chris has apprenticed with numerous Senior-Level Iyengar Yoga teachers since 2002 and, in 2014, travelled to Pune, India where he was blessed to meet B.K.S. Iyengar and to study with the Iyengar family at their yoga institute. As a result of his steadfast studies, Chris has established himself as a key teacher in the Iyengar Yoga tradition. His teaching is playful and challenging and blends refined bio-mechanical processes with profound philosophical inquiries. Chris also bicycles to work and around his home town of Royal Oak year-round, in all weather conditions.

The benefits from a solid yoga practice are many:

  • Spine, back, neck: releasing tension to assist with balance, strength and flexibility.
  • Calves, quadriceps, hamstrings, hips, glutes: tightness in these ones won’t allow extension of the spine or forward bends.
  • Hip flexors (primarily Ilio PSOAS): a central player in Yoga Asanas as it connects the torso with the leg. It is important to develop a healthy strong and balanced practice to help prevent injury.
  • Shoulders, neck, arms and hands: maintaing the alignment of the shoulders, arms and hands is essential to releasing tension away from the wrists and developing upper-body strength. It is also important to release any tension from the trapezius muscle by relaxing the neck and keeping the shoulders away from the ears.
