Iron Works Pike will be shut down by police between Spindletop and Newtown Pike starting around 7:30 am. If you are arriving after that time, you will need to come from the west, from I-75 or Georgetown Rd.
If you drive separately from the athlete you are planning to watch on race day, and cannot make it before 7:30 am when we will close the drive going into Spindletop Hall, we would suggest you park on Research Park Drive, which is located about a 1/4 mile west of Spindletop off Iron Works Pike. Turn onto Research Park Drive, follow it to the end and find a parking spot on either side of the road as close to the Legacy Trail as you can. Please observe normal parking rules, as there is one area with yellow paint on the curb indicating no parking. You will then have about a 1/2 mile walk on the Legacy Trail to get to Spindletop. However, we would strongly encourage you to arrive before 7:30 and park at Spindletop, as this will give you a much shorter walk to watch the event.
We hope to open the Spindletop parking area for leaving the event around 10:30, but not until most of the bikers are off the course.
Where to spectate
The course maps are available on the website, so this should help you get an idea where the action will be taking place. To watch the swim, you should walk around the pool along the side with the paved road. You will not be allowed to enter the pool deck, but there is plenty of room around the fence to stand and watch. Once your swimmer has left the pool, you could walk down towards the transition area or stand a long the road to watch them bike out. They will return along this road on the bike before heading out on the run. To watch them leave on the run and return to the finish area, you can walk over to the other side of the transition area, between the TA and the event tent. Just be careful of athletes that might be still coming from the pool towards transition. Definitely use caution anywhere you see a coned area for athletes!
All of the food we will be offering at the event tent is for athletes only. If you want to purchase food, Spindletop will have food available at very reasonable prices at the tiki bar near the pool deck starting at 10 am.
When can we leave?
If your athlete wants to stick around for the awards ceremony, then you will likely be onsite until at least 11:00 or 11:15. We plan to have the Duathlon awards ceremony around 10:30, and then triathlon awards ceremony around 11:15, but not until the last finisher has crossed the finish line. So please plan to be flexible. If your athlete is not attending the awards ceremony, they can leave as soon as we open up the transition area for removing their bikes, which will likely be around 10:15. The parking area next to the transition area will likely not open until at least 10:30, or once we are down to our last few bikers on the course.
Family of participants are invited to stay to spend the day at Spindeltop, so plan to spend to enjoy their great facility if you have nothing else planned!
