Reason to Race
Cancer is a disease that affects everyone. Whether you’re a relative, spouse, friend, coworker, caregiver or patient, you understand that when one person is diagnosed, their whole network joins together in the fight against cancer. Everyone’s network looks a little different. Sometimes, more assistance is needed for individuals battling cancer in our community to cover costs associated with treatments, medication, travel and missed time from work. That’s why the Mecklenburg County Cancer Association provides a channel through which the generosity of county residents, businesses, and others can financially assist cancer patients within Mecklenburg County in their efforts to combat cancer.
This 5K is planned in memory of Debbie Blue Winn, who lost her battle with ovarian cancer at age 66, briefly after being diagnosed. Debbie was a bright-spirited mother and Dee-Dee, wife, friend, active member of Antioch Baptist Church, president of The Gideons International Clarksville Auxiliary and dedicated employee of 37 years at Mecklenburg Electric Cooperative. She was health conscious and fitness-minded, always encouraging her colleagues to join her on morning and afternoon walks, and earning several trophies and medals in local 5K races.
