Please join Sisters Network Central Virginia Inc. on September 25, 2021 at 9am for our Health Forum and Virtual Walk. The Health Forum will consist of brief presentations from Dr. Robert Winn, Director, Massey Cancer Center, VCU, Dr. Vanessa B. Sheppard, Associate Director, Community Outreach Engagement and Health Disparities and Dr. Mary Helen Hackney, MD., Specialty Hematology/Oncology.
The VCU Massey Cancer Center Community Outreach and Engagement Team Office of Health Equity and Disparities Research will provide us with important information regarding the Commonwealth of Virginia. The forum will be moderated by Dr. Debbie Cadet PHD, VCU Massey Cancer Ctr., Program Manager Community Health Education Research.
Our volunteers will have the opportunity to participate in our community fundraising event by clicking on the registration button at the top of the page to register for the Virtual Walk-through Run Sign Up and / or by selecting the donate button to make a donation.
Sisters Network Inc. is the only National African American Breast Cancer Survivorship Organization in the United States. Our survivor-run organization promotes the importance of support, breast health education, advocacy and research. COVID 19 shined a bright light on the health disparities that exist within our community. Black women are 42% more likely to die of breast cancer than white women and black women under the age of 35 get breast cancer at twice the rate of white women and die at three times the rate.
Join the Health Forum at 9am and learn how Massey Cancer Center is working within the community to address health disparities. Our goal is to decrease the mortality rate of women diagnosed with breast cancer and help to eradicate the disparities we face in health care. Sisters Network Central VA Inc. is proud to partner with Massey Cancer Ctr. as we continue to strive to accomplish this goal.
This year a portion of the proceeds will fund the Breast Cancer Assistance Program (BCAP). This program is vital to the community by assisting survivors with utility bills, rent, groceries and co-payments. The virtual walk will enable us to raise the funds necessary to improve the outcome of African American women and provide support to the many women who have been financially affected by a breast cancer diagnosis as well as the COVID pandemic.
