Description

The Courtney Schilling Memorial 5K celebrates the life of Courtney Schilling. Courtney began her career at Forest Edge Elementary School in 2008 as a member of the special education team. She worked tirelessly with her students to help them succeed. After being diagnosed in July 2009 with small cell carcinoma of the ovary, she fought a brave, tenacious battle which she lost, just four months later, in October 2009. During her short 24 years, Courtney proved to be an accomplished runner, earning the position of captain on the Herndon High School track team. Courtney was also a UVa graduate and Phi Mu sorority president.

The race is hosted by the Forest Edge Elementary School PTA.

Runner safety has always been, and will continue to be, a top priority for the Courtney Schilling Memorial 5K. Please be mindful of the other participants and respect the race personnel to ensure a safe and enjoyable race for everyone. To that end:

1.The use of personal music devices is strongly discouraged at this race. To enjoy all the race has to offer and for the safety of all participants, the Courtney Schilling Memorial 5K encourages a headphone-free environment during the running of the race. We believe your race experience and those around you will be greatly enhanced by leaving the headphones at home or in the car. Running headphone-free allows opportunities to develop camaraderie with your fellow runners and to enjoy everything the race has to offer.

2. Baby strollers/baby joggers pose special safety considerations in road races because their inclusion
in road races increases the potential for injury to race participants and children. While the Courtney Schilling Memorial 5K allows baby strollers/baby joggers in the 5K run/walk, we ask that participants using them to start the race in the back of the runners and walkers. Baby strollers/joggers are prohibited in the Kids Fun Run.

3. Dogs are not allowed in the Courtney Schilling Memorial 5K.
