Climb to Conquer Cancer

Cancelled: Climb to Conquer Cancer

For many years, Amy’s Army has raised money to fund life-saving cancer research at VCU Massey Cancer Center.  Registration fees and donations to Climb to Conquer Cancer have been a big part of this effort. We also have had wonderful sponsors through the years, including our current sponsors, CapTech Consulting, Pedal Power RVA, and Isley Brewing Company.  Thanks, everyone!

Unfortunately, due to very low registration numbers, we have decided to cancel Climb to Conquer Cancer 2022.  To put on Climb, we incur some hefty expenses, including rental fees for Libby Hill and fees to our timing company, as well as other expenses.  In the early years, these expenses were a very small percentage of our registration fees and donations.  This year, based on our best projections, registration fees and donations will not cover our expenses.

By canceling the event, we will be able to help fund life-saving research at Massey.  You will have three options: (1) convert your registration fees to a tax-deductible donation to fund cancer research, (2) convert your registration fee to a ticket to Massey on the River (regular $75), or (3) obtain a refund.  Regardless of your selection about your registration fees, any additional donations that you made will be remitted to VCU Massey Cancer Center.

Please let us know your preference as soon as possible, and no later than Sunday, August 28, 2022.  If we do not hear from you, we will assume you prefer to convert your registration fees to a tax-deductible donation to fund cancer research.

Let me know if you have questions.

Here Are Your Options:

If you select this option, your race registration fee becomes a tax-deductible donation, which will fund cancer research at VCU Massey Cancer Center.

VCU Massey Cancer Center is working toward a future without cancer – one revolutionary idea, one promising therapy and one life saved at a time. Through innovative research, patient care, education and community engagement, Massey Cancer Center is discovering, developing, delivering and teaching effective means to prevent, detect, treat and cure cancer and to making these advancements equally available to all. Founded in 1974, Massey was among the earliest cancer centers designated by the National Cancer Institute. It is the only cancer center in the Richmond metropolitan region and the first of only two in the state designated by the National Cancer Institute, placing it among the top 4 percent of cancer centers in the country.

You can exchange your Climb ticket for a ticket to Massey on the River (for which the ticket price is $75, but you pay no extra), taking place on Friday, September 9th from 6 to 10 pm.  You will receive instructions on how to register (without charge) in a later email if you select this option.

Enjoy RVA's best end-of-summer party featuring live music, great food and drink from many of RVA's top breweries, wineries and distilleries, and spectacular views overlooking the James River from Historic Tredegar, while supporting innovative research and advances in cancer treatment and care at VCU Massey Cancer Center.  Proceeds from Massey on the River support innovative cancer research and care at VCU Massey Cancer Center.  More information: https://e.givesmart.com/events/shk/

Please note that it will take a couple weeks to process the refunds.

Description

Join us at the infamous Libby Hill as we Climb to Conquer Cancer and relive the excitement we all felt during the UCI World Championships in 2015!  You have the option of either a 22.9, 43.0, or 61.7 mile route through the scenic and flat countryside that surround Richmond.  The real fun occurs upon your return, as you climb up Libby Hill to compete to be King of the Mountain or Queen of the Mountain!

Here are the routes:

61.7 miles: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/36132996

43.0 miles: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/36122535

22.9 miles: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/36908818

You will start your ride from the top of Libby Hill and then at the end of the ride you'll have your timed climb up Libby Hill. For those who have joined us before, we are eliminating the 3 mile urban route and the first climb.

Pick up your chip between 7:30 and 9:00 at the top of Libby Hill.  This year we are not specifying a time that each wave begins.  Instead, you may begin your ride whenever you would like, but keep in mind that climbs up the hill will be timed only between 10:30 and 1:00.  In case you are not certain, we recommend that those doing the longest distance leave around 8:30 or so, those doing the middle distance leave around 9:30, and those doing the shortest distance can leave later.  If you are a slower rider, start earlier to ensure you finish on time.

Enjoy your ride! Upon your return, if you decide not to climb the hill, carefully dismount out of the way of other riders and walk up the sidewalk to the right of the hill.

Your finish time will be available from the timer after your ride. We will present awards for King of the Mountain/Queen of the Mountain overall, masters and grandmasters, plus age group awards.

Do not go near the timing mats unless you want to be timed!!!
