Description

10/5/2016 UPDATE:

Good news and bad news, everyone. The good news is - we are going to donate $2,181.16 to RACC. Between race entries (all 33 of you!) and donations (you guys are awesome), we were still able to raise a sizeable amount.

The bad news is - we did not raise enough to cover the park rental and insurance so unfortunately we will have to cancel the event.

I know - it sucks. But in order to give back to RACC, it makes most sense to readjust, look at our marketing and fundraising outreach and get a plan in place for another event or a 2017 Dorey Story 5k.

Everyone's support has been greatly appreciated and it is a major bummer that I have to officially pull the plug on this year's event. But funds are tight and to do it the right way - we need more and we simply don't have it.

So again - yay to almost $2,200 for RACC. Boo to not having the race.

Stay tuned for some other awesome events that will benefit RACC. We still have the Tacky Puppy Sweater Party coming up as well as some fun spring and summer events.

6/13/2016 UPDATE:

Finally, FINALLY - we have confirmation from the city and have an official date for this year's event! Thank you so much to all participants, volunteers and enthusiasts that are hanging in there with us. Please note that the official date (woo!) is going to be Saturday, November 5th. For those of you who are marathon or half marathon training - this is a great last race right before your big weekend. We look forward to seeing you all there!

RACE DATE: 11/5/2016

4/22/16 UPDATE:

RACE DATE INFO:

This year I am working with Richmond Animal Welfare Federation to create a larger event which will include having adoptable dogs, food trucks and other awesome vendors. Thank you so much for all of your patience with fundraising, multiple date changes and constant back and forth.

So, here's the good news - we teamed up with RAWF.

The not-so-good-but-still-good news: we pushed back for October 2016 event. ALL entries will still remain honored. If you are unable to attend the new date, let me know. We can issue refunds OR you can keep it on file as a donation to RACC.

I am waiting on the city to let me know when we will actually be able to have the event.

Thank you all so much for your patience!

2/10/16 UPDATE:

Great news! We have locked in the park AND we have teamed up with Richmond Animal Welfare Foundation to get the Dorey & Her Story 5k up and going. Richmond Animal Welfare Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that provides resources to Richmond Animal Care & Control (RACC) to help increase adoptions and improve the quality of life of pets in its care. The Foundation was established in 2005 after a study conducted by the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) determined Richmond Animal Care & Control may see an increase in animals when the Richmond SPCA became a limited admission/no-kill facility. RACC is the only open admission animal shelter in the city servicing over 3,000 animals per year that need immediate care. Today, RAWF supports the costs of critical emergency care and a part time trainer/behaviorist.

Race time: 10:00AM
1st wave: non-dog runners
2nd wave: runners and their dogs
3rd wave: 1 mile walkers (with and without dogs)

Meet Dorey, the a-dorey-able little mutt with three good legs, that loves to tear up the pavement on runs. She was rescued last June from Richmond Animal Control after spending months waiting for her forever family. She was picked up as a stray in Richmond with a very damaged rear paw that just never healed. Despite multiple treatments and vet visits, the team at Richmond Animal Control thought that amputating her leg would be her best option for a quick and speedy recovery.

Dorey recovered as if nothing ever happened but even with her determined and sweet demeanour, no one ever came for her. She sat in animal control as a staff favorite for months. From February until June, she waited patiently with little to no prospects for a forever home.

That's where I come in. My name is Lauryn and I am a sucker for sob story rescue dogs. I saw her on my Facebook newsfeed and immediately dashed to the shelter to meet her. After meeting her, I knew I couldn't leave her behind.

The funds we need to raise will cover the Special Events permit to use Bryan Park ($890.00), t-shirts and race day necessitities as well as the insurance required for such an event ($400). The additional funds raised will go directly to Richmond Animal Control.
