John's Bio:

John is the husband to an incredible wife, Julie and the proud father of three kids (a son plus younger boy/girl twins). He works as a data scientist at a startup in DC to support his family, and runs, bikes, and hikes to support his ability to do that day job with a clear mind. John grew up exploring the dense mountains and forests around his family’s rural home in Morgan County, TN, constantly trying to keep up with his older brother and cousins. John has been running most of his life but took a running hiatus during college and graduate school. After grad school, John rediscovered his love of the mountains on a road trip out west that included hiking the John Muir Trail with his wife. This prompted John to restart his running career starting with the 2013 Marine Corps Marathon. John’s first race in 10 years paired with insufficient training was a disaster. This only pushed John to continue running to see how he could improve. A year later, John had a Boston Qualifier. Since then, John has raced in several Ironman World Championships, including finishing 2nd overall at Ironman Maryland, set a Guinness World Record for fastest marathon dressed as a videogame character, and become the 15th person ever to finish the Barkley Marathons. The Barkley Marathons is an ultramarathon trail race held in Frozen Head State Park near Wartburg, Tennessee. Runners may elect a "fun run" of 60 miles or the full course of 100 miles. The 100 mile race is limited to a 60-hour period, and takes place in late March or early April of each year. The Barkley course was designed by Gary "Lazarus Lake" Cantrell. His idea for the race was inspired upon hearing about the 1977 escape of James Earl Ray, the assassin of Martin Luther King, Jr, from nearby Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary. Ray covered only 8 miles (13 km) after running 55 hours in the woods. The Barkley is limited to 40 runners, and usually fills up quickly the day registration opens. Requirements and times to submit an entry application are a closely guarded secret, with no details advertised publicly. Potential entrants must complete an essay on "Why I Should be Allowed to Run in the Barkley", pay a $1.60 application fee, and complete other requirements subject to change. If accepted, an entrant receives a "letter of condolence". Out of about 800 starts, the 100-mile race has been completed within the official 60-hour cut-off only 18 times by 15 runners. However, in 2006, nobody finished even the 60-mile "fun run" in under 40 hours.

Race Proceeds Beneficiary

You may ask yourself, “What is the Loudon County Education Foundation? And, what do they do?”

Currently, the Education Foundation offers scholarships to students, and classroom grants to teachers, conducts the annual Young Achievers Award Ceremony, holds an annual essay contest for grades 3 – 8 and facilitates funding for other programs for both the City and County school systems. Leadership Loudon County is also a part of the excellent package of programs offered by the Education Foundation. The Education Foundation is an important resource for our community. Total Contributions to the Educational System in Lenoir City and Loudon County since 2012:  2012 - $ 62,316, 2013 - $100,025, 2014 - $114,000, 2015 - $ 86,225, 2016 - $ 89,416, Total $451,982.00

According to Foundation historian and local attorney Harvey Sproul, the Foundation was created in answer to community need in 1998.  “For many years, the Loudon County Chamber of Commerce listed education as a priority in this community.  Businesses expressed the need for an educated workforce, and residents recognized the role of education in maintaining and growing a successful community.  It was in direct response to this need that the Chamber created the Education Foundation to offer support to the educational system in Loudon County,” said Sproul.  Board members Director of Loudon County Schools Dr. Jason Vance and Director of Lenoir City Schools Dr. Jeanne Barker see the value in the support that the Foundation provides to students and teachers in all school districts.
