Please join us at The Ohio State University’s Fred Beekman Park at 9:00am on Sunday, March 24th, 2019 to participate in The Hunger Run 5K and help chase hunger out of Central Ohio! We are hosting The Hunger Run 5K for the first time ever in support of Neighborhood Services Inc., a local food pantry and resource center located right here in Columbus, Ohio. Our goal is to spread awareness about hunger and food insecurity in central Ohio, bring the community together, and raise money for Neighborhood Services Inc.
Did you know that 17.9% of Franklin County residents are food insecure, nearly 1 in 4 Franklin County children live in food insecure households, and Ohio ranks #1 in food insecurity in the Midwest? These are just a few of the many reasons why Neighborhood Services is so important. NSI was started in 1965 through the workings of 12 different churches in the Columbus area and has been serving the University District and surrounding zip codes since its creation. NSI provides a variety of services to help support the community and reduce the effects of economic inequality and food insecurity in Columbus. Some of their initiatives include their food pantry, produce market, clothing room, and special holiday programs.
Every dollar raised for NSI provides FOUR meals, which means that by participating in The Hunger Run 5K you will help provide 120 meals. In 2018, Neighborhood Services served 601,125 meals. This FUNdraiser has the ability to feed a wide variety of well-deserving families and Columbus residents who are in need and we would love for you to join us on Sunday, March 24th. The 5K will also be followed by an after-party at Seventh Son Brewing Co. so participants, family, and friends can come together and celebrate the race! Sign up today to come walk or run, have some fun, and help race hunger out of Columbus!
Come to Neighborhood Services Inc. to pick up your t-shirt and race packet before the race in order to save some time the morning of and check out the pantry! We will be hosting Early Packet Pickup Friday, March 22nd from 4pm-8pm and Saturday, March 23rd from 12pm-4pm at NSI (1950 North 4th Street, Columbus, OH, 43201).
Race day parking is available at Carmack Lot 5 (the green lot pictured below) - this is available FREE OF CHARGE on event day from 8a-12p. Use caution when crossing the streets. Handicap parking is available next to Pressley Hall. We will have signs and volunteers directing you where to go!
Top runners will receive gift cards to local businesses in support of our Columbus Community. Awards will be given out based on the following categories: top 3 overall male/female, and top male/female finisher in each of the following age categories: 19 and under, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60 and over.
Can't make it to the race? Or maybe you're planning on participating but want to continue to show your support as we run hunger out of Central Ohio? Join us after the race for The Hunger Run's After Party at Seventh Son Brewing Co. (1101 North 4th Street, Columbus, OH, 43201). $1 of every beer will be donated to Neighborhood Services Inc. We will be celebrating from 2pm-5pm on Sunday, March 24th and hope to see you there!
Meet the organizers of the race: Lucy and Naomi! Lucy and Naomi are students at The Ohio State University, studying Political Science and Neuroscience, respectively. This academic year they are involved with the Nonprofit Immersion Program at OSU, where they are partnered with a local nonprofit in order to learn more about the inner workings of the nonprofit sector. This year they are partnered with Neighborhood Services Inc., where they decided to host a 5K to have FUN while raising FUNds for a great cause! They hope The Hunger Run 5K will be a great way to connect the Buckeye Community with the Columbus Community and raise awareness about the amazing work that NSI does.
