The Run Through Colorado Challenge

End May - September Golden, CO 80401 US

Mt. Bierstadt - Spur #1

Welcome to Guanella Pass!

===

Congratulations to our winners of the kickoff "Spur" Challenge!  When will the next one be?  Like many good spur trips they will be somewhat spontaneous and based on our mood and what the landscape looks like.   Except at least 2 or 3 more this summer though - entry is included with your long/short course registration!

1. Drew Ralston won on miles (65.42), would have been taken slightly on miles/elevation (8658 feet), but only needed 1 bonus challenge to win, and doing ALL SIX he also won 'Most Enthusiastic Participant'.

2. Julie Seydel put in some killer mileage and elevation as well! 64.5 miles and 8966 feet.

3. Kate Modzelewski apart from being a great help putting on this challenge, put in a solid effort of 42.4 miles and 7837 feet of gain.

====

Our Kickoff challenge "The Warm-Up: Mt. Bierstadt" celebrates the thaw of the mountains and the coming of the hiking season above treeline.

To commemorate this from 5/25 Monday - 5/31 Sunday we'll be logging our miles on the Bierstadt map.   Points will be accumulated based on your miles, vert, and a few random things - winners will get a little gift certificate to the running/outdoor store of their choice :)

Note: this challenge is a test of new technology and new concepts; there will be shortcomings and quirks with both the competition and the platform;  the goal is to work them out so the challenges the rest of the summer can be even better!   Please let us know any and all suggestions for improvement for us and for RunSignup.

How to Play

  1. You'll get emails sent to you with your results link and 'digital bib' - the first of a 6-piece bib map of Colorado we'll be making this summer.
  2. You can also upload by going straight to the Results page at https://runsignup.com/Race/Results/91424
  3. Like our Page on Facebook or Instagram, Join our Facebook Group, and/or our Strava Club to play along with the bonus challenges.
  4. Each day, submit your mileage, time, and elevation gain.  Watch yourself on the map as you climb Bierstadt - it may not take you long, but you can always go back up...   For the bonus points, see below.
  5. Note, for this first challenge due to the platform currently being "approve all or nothing", all results will have to be manually approved before becoming public.  Approve by activity type is an upcoming feature that should be in place for future challenges.  We'll do our best to stay on top of this.  Mileage + Vert may not actually be verified this time around, but for the bonus challenges you will need in the "comments" section to include a note to how you submitted your proof, i.e. tagged on FB, Insta, posted in Strava etc.
  6. As below there will be a few online challenges to keep things exciting and let you gain bonus points (especially if you're not near a mountain to run or hike..)  As you complete these your results will be verified

Points

Your leaderboard will rank you by miles and show your vert, but there's more to it than that in the final tally...

  1.  1 Mile = 1 Point (No Max).  Easy, right?
  2. You can earn up to 25 bonus points in the final standings for:
    • 1000ft Vert = 1 Point (10 Max)
    • 6 Day-of Challenges to be verified (2 points apiece) - and yes, you can submit these later if you miss one, until results are tabulated Sunday.
      • Monday: Post your digital bib on FB/Insta/Strava + Tag us
      • Tuesday: Bierstadt-relevant question to be posted Tuesday morning
      • Wednesday: Tell your Bierstadt or your best hiking story (pic optional) + tag us
      • Thursday: Stadt is German for "Town" - share a pic/story of your town + tag us
      • Friday: Bierstadt-relevant question to be posted Friday night
      • Saturday: You must be getting tired and I bet you know what "Bier" is German for..  post a picture of your favorite local beer, tag them + us.  (Optional: other beverage you enjoy after a run).
    • At the end of the week, if in ONE DAY you've done the Bierstadt-Sawtooth-Evans distance (10.5 miles) or elevation (3900 feet), you get 5 more points.
    • Lastly, any points to flesh out the 25 can be made up in Donations to Food Bank of the Rockies from Monday-Sunday.  Either on your own, or if someone else makes it and puts your name in the "on behalf of" field.

With any of these bonus challenges, just submit them choosing the appropriate activity on the results page, and they will be verified.  (This is why we want to verify all results, and unfortunately as of this moment we have to verify everything, or nothing at all - not by type of activity).

So max points can equal miles + 25 .. and what's that get you?
