Dustin J. Harris
SPC. DUSTIN J HARRIS
PATTEN, MAINE
On April 6, 2006 Spc. Dustin J Harris was KIA (killed in action)in Bayji, Iraq by an IED(improvised explosive device) while serving as lead Gunner during a Combat Logistics Patrol. Dustin was well aware of the risk of a Turret Gunner on any mounted patrol, chose that position due to his concern for others. Always volunteered to assume that risk, because he recognized that the rest of the vehicles & his Fellow Soldiers in the patrol depended on his mental alertness, judgment and skill. He also volunteered because of his Love of Family, his Band of Brothers and not wanting those who were married or had children assume that risk.
Dustin joined the US Army in 2004. Graduating from Basic Combat Training at Fort Jackson, in Columbia, SC. He attended Airborne school at Fort Benning in Georgia. His greatest accomplishment, along with Proudly wearing the Uniform of the US Army was becoming a Parachutist and referring himself as “Your Mighty Paratrooper” to family & friends. He was assigned to the 172nd BSB at Fort Wainwright, in Fairbanks, Alaska in February 2005 and Deploying to Mosul, Iraq in August 2005 during Operation Iraqi Freedom as a Heavy Wheeled Operator.
Spc. Harris awards and decorations include the Army Achievement Medal, Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Parachutist Badge, Combat Action Badge, and Weapons Qualification Badge.
