Whether it is your first, 15th or 100th half marathon; beginner to seasoned veteran stand to gain from this program.

     Those looking to run their first half-marathon should be up to 10 miles/week with a recent long run of 3-4 miles at a 14:00 min pace by Jan 21st.

     Those looking to improve on a previous half marathon effort should be up to 15-20 miles/week with a recent long run of 6-8 miles by Jan 21st.


Who Leads the Program?

The Scranton Running Company's Scranton Half Marathon Training Program is developed and led by Coach RJ Stiltenpole.  RJ is a graduate from Marywood University with a degree in Exercise Science and a minor in Coaching. RJ was a recent finalist for the prestigious Brooks Inspiring Coach of the Year Award, which is a multinational award with over 2,000 coaching nominees. He is also a Level 1 USA Track & Field certified coach. While at Marywood, RJ 's studies emphasized areas such as gait analysis, sub-maximal stress tests, V02 max testing, electrocardiograms, body composition testing and general injury prevention.  RJ was a three-year captain of the Marywood's cross country team. He also received the CSAC Runner of the Year Sportsmanship Award in 2007 and in 2009. RJ has competed in numerous road races and is a multiple Steamtown Marathon finisher. Now in his 40s, he recently ran his fastest Scranton Half Marathon finishing in 1 hour 28 minutes.

• 3 Weekly Coached group training runs on the half marathon course (i.e. long runs, speedwork, tempo runs, hill work) on Saturdays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays

• Coached pace groups every 30 seconds starting at 8:00 min easy pace through 14:00 min easy pace

• Organized dynamic warm-up exercises indoors at the Scranton Running Company prior to the start of each run 

• Organized static stretches indoors at the Scranton Running Company after each run

• Tues & Thurs will also include strengthening exercises including core exercises, squats, lunges, and a variety of other exercises indoors at the Scranton Running Company.  These exercises will enhance your running and help prevent injury.
