Getting Started with Triathlon: Essential Gear
You don’t need to spend thousands to participate in triathlon! Our goal is to make the sport accessible and get more people involved. If you’re ready to try a triathlon, here’s the minimum gear you’ll need:
-
Bike Helmet
- A helmet is non-negotiable. Most races require one, but more importantly, it’s essential for protecting your head. No helmet means no race—and no training with our team.
-
Bike
- A bike is necessary, but it doesn’t have to break the bank. Many participants use mountain bikes, hybrids, or older models. If possible, use or borrow a road bike for a better experience.
-
Sunglasses
- Sunglasses are a safety must-have to shield your eyes from debris, bugs, and wind—not just the sun—during the bike ride.
-
Running Shoes
- A comfortable pair of running shoes will work for both the bike and run portions of the triathlon.
-
Compression or Tri Shorts
- Compression shorts are essential, but if you can, invest in tri shorts. They dry quickly after swimming and feature a light seat pad for added comfort during the bike portion.
-
Moisture-Wicking Shirt & Sports Bra/Swim Top
- Wear a moisture-wicking shirt after the swim to stay comfortable. Women should also consider a sports bra or swim top for added support.
-
Swimming Gear
- Don’t forget a swim cap, goggles, and a swim buoy for open-water training.
If you enjoy your triathlon experience (and we’re confident you will!), our coaches and team leaders can guide you on upgrading your gear. This may include:
- A trisuit or wetsuit for improved performance.
- Cycling shoes and clip pedals for efficiency.
- Electronics like GPS devices or heart rate monitors to track progress.
Starting simple ensures you can focus on the experience—upgrades can come later as you grow in the sport!
