Our family is participating in a virtual race on behalf of Crossroads, Inc. Proceeds from this event help formerly incarcerated women rebuild their lives after they leave prison. Women who complete the Crossroads program have a 90% chance of becoming self-sufficient.
Why (my family and) I are involved?
Without hesitation, I accepted the call, I am one of the Board of Directors of this beautiful organization.
I may have not been incarcerated, but what resonated the most for me, is that I relate with this women because I too am broken, I too have fallen, I too would want to be seen, I too would love to be given a second or third or fourth or even 94th chance in my life as Sister Terry would put it. Crossroads lives by “We love the women, until they learn to love themselves” – when I heard this, my heart warmed and sparked a fire within me. I am here because I want to be a part of this organization that silently serves, silently gives, silently loves and silently gives mercy and compassion. And as a community, I urge you, that as we silently join, we will loudly make an impact on each of these women’s lives, and ours….
I love what Bryan Stevenson had said in his book, Just Mercy, and I quote, “Proximity has taught me some basic and humbling truths, including this vital lesson: Each of us is more than the worst thing we’ve ever done. My work with the poor and the incarcerated has persuaded me that the opposite of poverty is not wealth; the opposite of poverty is justice. Finally, I’ve come to believe that the true measure of our commitment to justice, the character of our society, our commitment to the rule of law, fairness, and equality cannot be measured by how we treat the rich, the powerful, the privileged, and the respected among us. The true measure of our character is how we treat the poor, the disfavored, the accused, the incarcerated, and the condemned.”
I hope that you can join my family and I help the women of Crossroads… If you would like to connect me with the right person in your organization or perhaps you know of someone who would be interested in sponsorship or volunteering their time and/ or talent with us, please let me know. Should you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to email me at lgcrossroadswomen@gmail.com.
