Special Olympics New York provides year-round sports training and competition in 22 Olympic-style sports to children and adults with intellectual disabilities at no cost to the athletes, their families or caregivers. As most, we were forced to pivot in 2020 in order to continue to provide engagement for our athletes during a time that so many of our athletes faced extreme social isolation. We implemented virtual programming and continue to encourage our athletes to engage in physical fitness and healthy choices. We are now working diligently to slowly offer in-person training for very small groups while continuing to offer virtual “at-home” opportunities for our high-risk athletes and those who participate in higher risk sports. It’s all expensive and as a grassroots organization we look for opportunities like to this give our fans the chance to support us through their own sports experiences.
