I’ve been faced with an uphill battle against multiple autoimmune diseases for much of my life. It has been anything but easy. Yet one saving grace in all of this has been my palliative care doctor. Thanks to his brilliance and compassion, I’ve been able to manage almost everything at home/outpatient these last few years. Though my bedroom is essentially a mini hospital and I must stay on top of around the clock IV nutrition, IV fluids, IV medications and other therapies, tending to numerous medical devices, and dealing with troublesome symptoms day in and day out — I am home. My family gets to be together. I get to snuggle in my bed with my dog every night. I no longer have to spend months on end living in the hospital.
Every bit of symptom control I have is thanks to my palliative care doc. While what I face daily is obviously intense, I am so grateful for something that keeps me alive and home, and offers some amount of relief for my symptoms. None of this would be possible without palliative care. I don’t even want to think about where I would be without my palliative doc fighting so hard for me not just the last few months, but the 10+ years he’s been my doctor. He’s saved me and my family in more ways than you know. He’s my champion, my hero.
Back in 2019, the years of seeing and experiencing the power of palliative care drove my sister to host a 5k fundraiser for the palliative care department at Mott. She dreamed big, and our community showed up even bigger. That first, amazing year launched “Run, Walk ‘N Roll” into an annual event and led to the establishment of “Elizabeth’s Courage Fund”. Every dollar we raise goes to this fund to help further deepen and expand the impact of palliative at Mott. It would be a joy to have join us at our in person event or participate virtually, and an honor to have you support “Team Elizabeth”. Thank you all for being such an incredible support for me and my family over the years. Having our community come together in love and support of one of the most helpful care teams I’ve ever worked with is simply incredible. I don’t know what else to say but thank you!! You are truly making a difference.
