What Habitat Does…The most common misconception about Habitat is that Habitat houses are given away.... not so! Habitat homeowners are sold their homes at cost and make a monthly payment back to the Habitat Build Fund. Habitat homeowners do not pay interest on their mortgages. The true gift of Habitat! Families put in 300-500 hours of Sweat Equity, helping to build or remodel their home and pay a monthly mortgage payment of no more than 30% of their income for 15-30 years. An affordable home is peace of mind. It offers space for kids to grow and play, a chance for the family to work toward security, and leaves room for other life essentials such as health care, savings, and education.
In order to qualify for a Habitat home: Potential homeowners must be living in substandard housing, have an ability to pay and a willingness to partner.
