Seven years ago, I retired with dreams of travel, more time with family and all the good things that come with a new chapter. Just a few days into the dream, my wonderful husband, Richard, was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia. The next nine months were filled with a clinical trial, extensive hospitalizations and ultimately, his death. Within a few months we were in Covid lockdown.
It was in this dark time, I had the amazing fortune of being introduced to Imagine, a Center for Coping with Loss. Imagine supports children and families coping with loss and seeks to foster resiliency and emotional well-being for all those who grieve. I joined the Board and have been ever grateful for the opportunity to embrace this mission, the work and the people who make it possible.
Greta’s Run is one of Imagine’s largest fundraisers. The event was created in 2012 by the friends and family of Greta Schoeneman, a Westfield High School freshman who lost her life in a tragic accident at the school over twenty years ago. Greta’s Run was proudly inherited by Imagine and continues with the support of the Schoenemann family and the greater Westfield community. Each year, participants run in memory of Greta and the many loved ones our community has lost, helping to honor their stories and keep their legacies alive.
Each year I walk in honor of Richard. If you’re able, I’d be grateful for your support helping Imagine continue this important work.
