Running in his footsteps

In November of 2024, the Biola University community lost an angel in the form of a professor and friend, Phil Woodward. Phil was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in late August and fought courageously till the end, never ceasing to share with others the love of Christ. I had the honor of learning from Professor Woodward during my freshman year at Biola. During that semester I realized accounting can be fun and enjoyable and I had faculty and staff in my corner who believed in me and wanted to see me thrive, one of them being Professor Woodward. As the semester progressed, Professor Woodward drew our class together and to this day it will forever be my favorite class at Biola. Seeing him on campus between the Lim Center and the Business Building always brightened my day. His care for each of his students and desire to see each one be a light in this dark world was so evident and he was loved by many. Classmates and I love to reminisce about hilarious class times with Phil or how we sat in his messy office with him while he miraculously found our exams in his slew of papers or how he used every color marker in every single lecture. The other day I had the opportunity to sit down with Phil's wife, Cam, and share with her my idea to run the Orange County Marathon in honor of Professor Woodward. With great joy, she shared with me that Phil ran the first-ever Orange County Marathon in 2004. This was all the inspiration I needed and I know that while I run, Woodward will be right on my heels encouraging me just like he did. A verse that's been in my heart and mind during training is Hebrews 12:1-3. "Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart." Phil now runs with no weight, fixing his eyes on Jesus and praising him forevermore.

I will be running the Orange County Marathon to raise money for Project Purple, an organization that supports pancreatic cancer patients and their families and funds research. Will you help me in my goal of raising $7,000?

Thank you for your support!
