Why I Ride in the Lobo Cancer Challenge 🎗️
On September 20, I’ll be riding in memory of two people who shaped my life—my dad, David Bickel, and my aunt, Sister Juniper Bickel.
My dad was a man of quiet strength and discipline. He passed away in 2011 after a brave fight with prostate cancer. His example continues to guide me every day. My aunt, Sister Juniper, was a devoted Franciscan Sister who spent her life serving others through education and healthcare. She ministered to cancer patients with Presbyterian Hospice in Albuquerque before passing away in 1999 after years of battling breast cancer.
There have been so many others, including Carla's mom, countless friends, co-workers, and their spouses; most of us have been impacted by cancer in some way.
I ride to honor their lives—and to help others get the care, research, and support they need. Every dollar raised stays in New Mexico to support cancer care, research, education, and outreach at the UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center. I’m proud to be one of the “Challengers”—a community that’s all in to fight cancer together. Every mile matters, and every gift helps.
